I found number 1 to be too unreliable, even before I lost most of my hearing. Number 2 was always the most reliable for me.

I think the only thing I've returned to HD was an expensive 3-way LED light bulb. I think they claimed something like a 10 year warranty and it was a bit over 2 years old. But I had the same experience; no problem at all getting a replacement at no cost.
