I went ahead and put perforated drain pipe behind the block I have done so far.
I know, some think I’m nuts for doing the drain pipe when I haven’t even finished the first course yet, but I’ve had multiple cave-ins and I’m just trying to make sure I can get some wall up asap by the most susceptible area to cave.
I even have the apron area to pour yet. That’s the section with all the pieces of rebar.

I just now found my tool for smoothing the seam between blocks. I may not use it until the 5th course as everything below that will be covered in dirt, inside and out.
A small kitchen spoon works good as well.
You know you’ll misplace it again before course 5!!

About 12 block a day is what my back will tolerate. Then there’s tarring the outside and hauling/washing gravel for backfill, grinding and placing rebar, etc. The actual laying of block is about 25% of the job, so I’m happy with the progress rate.
