That is correct; the railroad community really pushed for standardizing time zones. Otherwise their timetables were a mess. Even within the time zones(as well as pre-time zones) most went by the sun for instance High Noon.
Richard Sears (yes, that Sears) was instrumental in making it happen. He sold watches to station managers.

Yes, the total amount of daylight of course isn't affected at all. The question is, would you rather have more daylight after work when you can actually use it, or in the morning? A majority of people would rather have the hour of daylight in the evening when it can be used to complete chores around the property after work, get little league baseball games in, mow the grass, or whatever else it is you need to do. Putting that hour on the front of the day when most people are driving to work is a waste.

Long live DST!!!
DST is fine in the summer when the days are long, but not so much in the winter months when there's less than 10 hr. of daylight. At least switching to standard time gives you more daylight in the morning as opposed to it not getting light until 8am in December & January. Regardless of ST or DT, it's still dark at 5 during those months, at least in northern states.

No matter what the clock says, weekdays in Dec and January I never see my house during daylight hours.

Yes, short days suck....but at least I don't have to mow! (y)
I know, in Summer I b**** because it's too hot. In winter I complain that the days are too short. In spring the blackflies are bad. Fall months I say are too short to get everything done.

Do you see a pattern yet? 😆

I love the change of seasons though. ⏰

I personally don't care what time it is; my schedule is very flexible and I can get it to anything after a bit.

Throwing in an arbitrary schedule shift like Standard time/Daylight savings time changes is bad for everyone; there's a bit of evidence that it literally kills people (deaths increase immediately after the shifts and reduce later).

My primary beef with DST is that the sun is highest at 1PM instead of noon.

I wonder how many people actually know that.
In my younger days I paid a lot of attention to the sun in winter, as I didn't want to be caught miles from the truck when the sun went down.

The sun is rarely at its highest at noon. There are a lot of other factors, like what time of year it is, where are you within your timezone, etc. The only way you would even get close is to return to local time.

Make fun of me all you want.

First time in my life, last night, I turned my clock ahead an hour on the wrong date.

I have a pretty good internal clock, and I always get up at 0500.

I had a pretty messed up morning :ROFLMAO:

Honestly, an hour forward or an hour back doesn't even affect me in the least.
I could never see why some people got so screwed up over and hour more or an hour less of sleep.

Agreed. The only thing I don't like about it is now it's darker earlier when I get off of work. We like to go for a walk after dinner. Sunset is 5:30 now, instead of 6:30. I get about 45 minutes of daylight with my wife on weekdays. Oh well. 🙃

My problem with the time change is that my alarm cat doesn't understand it. Now he's waking me up at 5:30 am to feed him breakfast.

The thing I like is dawn comes earlier so I don't have to use a flashlight when I start work. It's safer for the kids waiting for the school bus also.

I'm with you two. I have never bought the arguments either way for or against it, as there are many countries north of the continental 48 that seem to do just fine, with darkness that sets in much earlier.

When we were actively training horses for long distance rides, the end of DST meant the end of evening training rides off the property.

My spouse is a different story. To her, the end of Daylight Savings Time is an apocalypse. She is pretty rational otherwise, but the time change is weeks of disruption to her. She complains of only seeing the animals in darkness, except on weekends. Like @MossRoad, to her, the loss of the evening light is some sort of triumph by an ancient, all powerful god of darkness, who might not ever give the light back.

So, there is at least one person out there for whom the change from DST to standard time is a big deal.

All the best,

BG

My previous experience with an alarm cat is that it takes a few days for them to reset their internal clock to the new schedule.

I guess there are a lot of people that eat lunch late, maybe they need to get out of bed before noon. I'm getting ready to eat lunch and looked up at the sun at noon and the sun is nearly at it's high point. Last week it seemed like it was still about 10:00 when looking at the sun at noon.

Assuming your comment is directed towards my confession...

As noted, I get up (for better or worse with my wife) generally at 0500 every day, 7 days a week. I use a alarm clock if I need to get up earlier for something important for work, as I still work for at least two hours for work on the weekend to the dismay of my wife because I actually love my job.

Time changes always happen on Saturday night going into Sunday morning.

Just so happens we had to be at Church early this past Sunday morning for some volunteer work. Thing is, we also planned a to go for a early morning walk to get it in before we went to church (and time to shower as well), and it was my job to wake my wife up because I'm the "early riser". My wife however does not use a alarm clock but her cell phone.

Let's just say I woke up at my general time, my alarm clock was really screwed up, but that's the time I thought it was looking at my clock, and after getting my wife up ready for a walk, she asked me some questions because she was confused to what her cell phone was telling her.

THIS is why my day was pretty screwed up. Hopefully this makes a little more sense.

As noted, first time in my life I put the clock AHEAD instead of backwards on the proper date. For whatever reason, never thought to think Spring Forward, Fall Back, and had it in my mind for whatever reason that I had to turn the clock ahead an hour.
