240 volt 200 amp disconnect switch question

in Texas, his feeders are probably only 18" down...at least they were when i worked in Lubbock Tx.
Yes, that would be NEC minimum, right? It would be a lot easier to make and pull a vault at that depth.

He wrote four feet, and I have no reason to doubt that. I think my well pump power line is below 24" here, but I haven't dug down to find it exactly. With all the burrowing animals around here (ground squirrels, coyotes, foxes, and badgers), if it were me, here, I would bury wire at least 48" or use conduit below 24" just to get it out of the way of the varmints. The badgers are amazing to watch and seem to disappear into our rock hard soil as if it is water. All of which reminds me that I need to go rototill some of the steeper slopes to spread some burrow mounds that are getting too tall to safely drive over. My limit is 30 degrees, and on a 20+degree slope, it doesn't take much of hump to make driving the tractor very uncomfortable.

All the best, Peter

The black circle is where my meter is. I have a 1,200 amp breaker box with six 200 amp breakers. I'm using three of them right now, including the one we're talking about.

What's a 1200 amp breaker box? Is that a 1200 amp service?

A property we looked at here in Oregon had an 800 amp service and a tiny 1 br modular home. I think they had plans to put in a large marijuana operation and decided to sell the property instead. The electrical service panel was huge!

Yes, I have a 1,200 amp service. When the power company was here to figure out what they needed to bring power into my land, they asked what I wanted. I replied that I wanted as much power as possible. He said they could do 1,200 amps for no additional charge. It seemed like a no brainer to me!!

Thats weird. Our coops here will install a 1200 if you asked…but your going to pay commercial rates every month. Everything above 400 amps gets hit with this. I guess texas really wants everything to go electric….this from a state built on gas.

We are a minimum of 24" in East TN. I did 32 where I could.

I remember you had ideas about a RV park with lake and campsites… 1200 amp would give you that ability…

The Surgery wing has a single 1200 amp breaker ahead of the pad mounted transformer and I think it is 600 volts?

The utility where we were in California wants to see your permitted building plans and an electrician's load calculation. Then they tell you what service you're going to get and what it will cost. If there are upgrades to the wiring or transformer you're paying for it. The utility in Oregon is a little more flexible but they wanted the load calc too. They decided what size transformer to give me based on the load calc. To put a 15kw solar array on the house we had to pay an extra $5k for a larger transformer. The lineman said they started charging last year. I think they are seeing what the California utilities are getting away with and copying them.

NEC Art 300.5(E) Per Code only conductors rated for direct burial can be spliced underground without a junction box, and only if you use an approved/listed splice method.
If the conductors are in conduit and the conductors are not rated for direct burial a splice is required to be made in a junction box. Junction box can be above ground if protected from physical damage or below ground and rated for the weight of traffic that it will be exposed to.

Underground Splice lugs must be rated for the temperature rating used to select the ampacity of the conductor.
