I run everything 40:1. Dealers cant tell you different either due to epa law. ;)

But knowing a few dealers that are in the know. They will tell wink wink if they trust ya. They run their stuff 40:1 min.

Look for FD oil IMO too.

Always tune to your mix. AT or MT will do it for ya.

Congress creates laws - EPA makes regulations & mess :sneaky:

Just saying.

Many Stihl shop manuals describe how to tune that particular engine using a tachometer.
Most have always had a max rpm listed in the manual and recommend that it be tached. With todays saws with the variable spark timing and electronic rev limiters a tach is almost required to tune one. Too easy to go too lean and not realize it without a tach to measure rpm's and if you have exceeded the rev limiter or not. Some saws will sound like they are 4 stroking at the rev limiter which could indicate to some people that it is running too rich but in reality is too lean already. Some are not as noticeable and will only show up as a fluctuation in the rpm on the tach.

Yes the difference between fourstroking and hitting the limiter is pretty subtle. Rather than listen for four stroking while it's free revving, I listen for it when I lift while in a cut. For me that's more reliable. Also I prefer not to free rev an engine at full throttle.

My Stihl manuals spec an idle rpm, a full throttle free rev rpm, and describe how to correctly set each one. The idle adjustment winds up a little richer than what you'd get by just setting the rpm, and that improves starting and throttle response when you open the throttle while its idling.

I agree that the higher the oil to gas ratio the leaner the engine will run, however if the carburetor is readjusted to compensate no problem.

40:1 on my saws.

When I'm down to the last few ounces in my fuel can, I put in enough oil for a full gallon of gas, and then fill it up, therefore I may be a little rich on the oil side. I have a Husky 572xp, so the carburetor is auto tune. I hooked it to the computer at work a few weeks back to check codes and updates to the firmware, I have 392.6 hours of run time on the saw, still with the original spark plug and air filter. I run ethanol free gas and Husky 2-stroke oil, the Husky oil also has a stabilizer in it, so the gas left in the can from last summer still burns great this summer, and smells fresh. This is what I do, take it with a grain of salt. Use good fuels, and good oils, and you should be fine. Most of the saws I have rebuilt over the last several years for customers were due to buying the cheapest stuff they could find, straight gassing, or just plain driving over their saws after placing them under the truck to cool off.

Years ago I accidently grabbed the wrong can and filled my old Homelite with 50:1 instead of 16:1. It seized up after it got hot; I took it back to the barn and got my Stihl and finished that job.
I sprayed 10W motor oil into the spark plug hole and began working the crankshaft backNforth with a wrench. It eventually would make a complete revolution, so filled it with the correct 16:1 mixture, reinstalled the spark plug and pulled the rope. It started and ran well, and has ever since. Luck was on my side that time IMO.
I no longer use that heavy old Homelite, at 82 it wears me out just loading it into the tractor carrier. Finally gave it to a cousin, now he says "too heavy".

I had a similar problem occur with my 2 stroke Toro lawnmower. Only difference was I found out after she had run it with regular gas in it once. It didn't seize up though. Just put the mixed gas back in and hasn't ever had an issue.

I avoid the pre-measured/pre-diluted oils due to possibility of not being accurately filled.
A 1/4 or 1/2 ounce discrepancy makes a significant change in mix ratio.
My saws are 30 plus years old and run like great so I’m not leaving anything to chance.
I also mix 1 gallon sat a time & use precise lab beakers and mix 4 ounces per gallon for 32-1.

One small bottle of 50:1 Stihl oil to 1 gallon of fuel..... Since my fuel can only hold 1 gallon and I buy oil by the 6 pack it hard to make a mistake.... Only have four 2 cycle engines and all are 50:1...

Ive been using 50:1 for 30 years with no issues. Well, let me restate ….. no problems for last aprox 10 years . Thats when I switched to non ethanol fuel.

Now no problems. I no longer need to rebuild or replace small carbs since swapping to non ethanol.

Been using the manufacturer recommended 50-1 since the 70’s and it has never caused me any problems.
Have friends that swear 40-1 is a better choice.

I buy the pre mix bottles for 2 gallons and then pump 2 gallons of gas in the can. I don’t buy the 2 stroke oil in larger bottles to measure and I don’t attempt to pour gas from a larger can. The potential for error is too high for my taste doing it that way. I run everything 50-1 and I’ve never had a problem doing it.

I don’t use enough all year to mix more than a gallon at a time and I’m willing to pay for the 1 gallon bottles.

If it sits too long I pour what’s left in the can into the 4-stroke mower tank…

Mix my 2-stroke fuel 1 gallon at a time. 50:1 Echo Red Armour. Have 89 and 90 ethanol free gas available in my area. Also keep Echo Red Amour pre-mixed in quart cans on hand for unexpected needs. Also 50:1 ratio with a 5-year shelf life if unopened, 2 years after opening
