Hay wagons; let's see them!

Yet another approach. I've seen a few commercially built wagons made this way, so I thought I'd try it on one of mine. It costs less because there are no 4x4 cross members and 2x6's cost less per foot in shorter lengths than 16 foot lengths. I don't see why it wouldn't be just as strong. Now I have 32 2x6's supporting the outside edge instead of 5 or 6 4x4's. Time will tell.

Looks good. I've replaced 3 4x4's and one main runner on my h&s basket like yours a few years ago so hopefully a full rebuild is a long ways away.

Actually, it's no closer to the ground because I had to use 2x10's for the stringers to be able to clear the tires.

Here is the hay trailer that my father built several years ago.



There are several advantages over some of the 4 wheeled wagons posted here.

• It generally tows and backs nicely. No brakes/lights, but it is generally street legal (with follow vehicle), and could have lights added.
• The Drop axle design means that the first row on the trailer is lower than the traditional wagons (where the first row starts at the height of at least the 2nd row on this trailer).
• The tires/fenders are inset, so that it is rare to get bumped by a fender, or have one's toes run over (which can happen with a car trailer).
• Square fenders are designed to be bale sized, so it holds the stack together.

One gets about 70 bales with 4 rows. (16+18+18+18) which is easy enough to load from the ground (50 to 60 lb bales). The fifth row is a bit tougher to load from the ground, but one can generally toss another 8 to 10 bales up on top if one wishes, and it isn't too late in the day.
