Now the question is, will the prices for a 5-gallon plastic can drop from $32 back to $12 like they once were.
Doubt that.
There'll be engineering costs to design a vent system that they already had decades ago, setup costs to design and fabricate the new equipment again that they had decades ago, new delivery costs just because. The inevitable higher costs because it's a new, improved item.
I will say tho, Costco around here has been selling a pair of 20L cans with vent for CAN$45 which is US$33 for years and that's delivered, less in store. They have the stupid ratchet locks around the fill but a utility knife fixes that.

That’s a pretty good deal, MM. Are they selling a yellow diesel version? Or just red?

I drilled these into my current, nanny state 5 gallon cans. They help.
But activating the button while holding a 5G can up at waist height without spilling isn’t easy when it’s full without spilling fuel.

The nanny state cans are so stupid. Probably designed by faculty lounge types.

The problem I had with the vents is the cap lanyard breaks. I went with drilled holes and rubber stoppers. Most of the time I fill using a funnel and no nozzle at all. No vent needed, just pour at a rate that doesn't make the can GLUG GLUG.

I have two NO-SPILL cans from TSC. One is a 1-1/4 gallon can for the 2 cycle stuff. It is the ticket for filling small equipment without slopping. The button provides excellent control. The other can is a 2-1/2 gallon that is used for filling the pressure washer, etc where slopping gasoline on a hot engine makes me cringe. It's also useful for stopping on the gallon mark on the smaller can when mixing another batch of 2 cycle fuel.

I find this as a sad commentary on today's world. Before the EPA edicts I don't recall any major discussions about gas cans. Some may have worked better than others but you just found one you liked and that is what you bought. There may have been pouring issues with the old cans but it wasn't a major topic.

Enter the EPA with their edict and we are all up in arms about the cans. But it is a good thing the EPA told them to add vents. I'm sure no one in the gas can industry was smart enough to realize that adding a vent would improve flow.

So is the gas can industry that stupid, do they not care, or is it not as simple as the EPA makes it out to be? Just shaking my head over the whole issue.

Lucky for me the last gas can I bought was over 20 years ago when I had to add diesel to my line up.

There are very good fuel cans out there - but they are expensive. Because of the remote areas of the country I travel I always carry at least 10 extra gallons of gas. A few years ago the old "GI" 5 gallon gas cans I was using began cracking on the sides so I finally invested in a set of Wavian brand cans. I think they are built better than the old-time gas cans; they vent through the nozzle and empty out very quickly when pouring. The nozzles cam into place and will not leak. Yes, they come in yellow for diesel.

You can pretty much picture the arrogant know it alls who decided totally sealed gas cans were the answer to cram down everyone's throats, and are the same ones who will never admit that the gas cans they mandated are responsible for more fuel being spilled than ever before.

But it is a good thing the EPA told them to add vents.
Read something a little while back about people saying why doesn't some one invent a milk carton with no plastic. Ho---leee---s***...really!!! Something similar to what we had years ago that works that didn't require plastic, I wish I had thought of that LOL.

I recently bought a racing style can at Atwoods and it works really well. I think it was a knockoff of the VP Racing and was only $28. It had a vent. Probably only a matter of time until I lose the threaded cap though.

Pretty hard to spill gas filling that kind of jug because of the wide opening plus it has a vent for easy pouring. And it can be sealed tightly for storage. No fool spring loaded spout to mess things up. But allow us to use a gas container that makes sense?

This sounds like a good idea, until you consider how to hold it from inside the can while tightening the retaining nut.

NSP-1467S, 5 Gallon Gas Can for Diesel Fuel with View Stripe,

Pricey on Amazon but works very well with no issues. I have 6 for ethanol cans for my generators and 2 diesel cans for my tractor

I don't mind government regulations if they actually prevent idiots from doing damage, but the gas can debacle wasn't one of the good ideas! Like many said, they caused frustration and much more gas to be spilled. I remove the spring loaded crap from the fill spout, and solve the no-vent problem by drilling an appropriate hole for a rubber tire valve stem (without the Schrader core, of course). I have to remove the cap, but at least I have a great vent to make pouring easy. You have to have a wire threaded thru the can's fill hole and out the new vent hole to pull the valve stem up and thru, but it isn't hard to do. Tire stores always have piles of old valve stem to give away.

All of my cans have these in them.
I drilled the hole and used a piece of soft wire with a L bend on one end to hold the stem as I pulled it through the hole. Taped the jaws on my pliers to prevent thread damage while I used them to hold the stem as I tightened the nut. Pulled the wire through the stem and its done.
