I hear people calling for silicone for wiring splices.
I would use a latex caulk compound or just a dielectric grease then lots of tape.
"Silicone" is corrosive if you can smell the acetic acid smell it will corrode.

When I was in Florida I used Silicone but found that it also attracts ants.

I have installed a few artesian well pumps and the use waterproof splices.
Basically they are crimped connectors that are heat shrink and contain a small amount of 'hot glue'.

If it is good enough for total immersion it obviously will be OK for burial.

But isnt latex water based? Im not sure but thats what I thought?

Ive used underground splice kits for years. Only use kind with glue treated shrink wrap....just like the utility company uses. Do not need to have access to splices afterwards...but a record of where it is would be a good thing.

Good idea to map out the location. I did just that and wrote it near the outlet box.

Only when wet. Once cured, it's safe. The water is a medium to allow flow and application. It evaporates out once exposed to air. Think about the latex wall paints. You can use water to clean brushes and rollers while the paint is fresh, but not after it has dried.

In a splice like this, it would be in a small enough quantity to fully cure and keep moisture out. Conductors will need to be isolated by mechanical means however since the caulk might be conductive before if fully cures.

I sealed a splice with Lexel. Seems like a good sealant for keeping out water /moisture

Here's another vote for splice kits done correctly. This is one phase,14.4KV to ground. We had these high voltage type splices in the ground for years and I believe that low voltage doesn't make the same exacting demands. On a side note, notice the old cable (early 1980's) on the right has the ground/neutral wrapped around on the outside! No one nowadays can explain why they did that back then.View attachment 644137
