Is protection necessary for a tractor I might get?:) I've looked at the temporary metal/steel garages that's open-air as a solution, I think they run $800 or so. I've also considered a pole barn or even a Q type arched steel garage but wasn't sure if I'd need a building permit or not which I'd rather not do. Any thoughts?

Not knowing where you're at I can't comment on building permits. As far as a building for your tractor...... No you don't need a building for it however a lean-to type equipment shed will help keep your equipment cleaner and if you have lights in it you can work on your equipment in any type of weather.

scrimshaw33 if you are talking about getting one of those metal carports that you see a lot of these days ask if you can get the ridges of the metal sheeting to run from the peak of the carport to the eaves instead of running the length of the carport. It would cost more, not sure how much more, but it would be worth it I believe. Also pay a little extra to get it with longer legs. If you get a carport with the metal running lengthwise the building and there is any kind of a swag in it the water will get behind the ridges and will stay there until the sun dries it off and that can cause it to start to rust.
