Our scout troop just took some supplies to Refugio.

Good deal and tell them Thank you from me. Refugio got torn up pretty badly. The locals pronounce it "Refuree O"

Just dug this picture out from Sunday the 27th of August as Harvey's outer bands were training across Conroe. The water usually flows in that small rock bed at the bottom of the ditch. You can see where the water line got to while at Church and this is when we got home around 9:30am. I think we could have rafted down to the ponds on this small river. I wouldn't even let the kids float boats as they would have been swept away!

By Sunday night around midnight Lake Conroe was almost completely full and the SJRA had to "pull the drain plug" so to speak and cranked open the spillway gates to almost 80,000 CFS. That water contributed to the wave that wiped out points South and East including River Plantation, Parts of Porter and Kingwood as well as backing up Lake Creek, Spring Creek and Cypress Creek.

Our neighborhood was high and dry but we spend the past couple weeks helping friends out in all different parts of Houston with their cleanup. Hope y'all are doing well and stayed safe. If anybody needs help cleaning up please let us know. Glad to hear you are OK Brandi!

Actually I think They were there making sure that:
1. no incidents started by cutting in line
2. gasoline was not dispensed into unapproved containers

Just got back from Houston today. I took a ride around Meyerland and Braeswood. There are lots of piles of furniture and sheetrock by the curb. Grocery stores are back to normal, and gasoline was as low as $2.19 to $2.29. The last time it flooded that bad by Brase bayou was "Allison" I lived in a High-rise condo on Brase bayou That had extensive damage - over 20' of water in the basements and a few inches on the first floor. We did millions of $ in repairs and did preventive flood construction - flood gates, aquarium glass, berms, etc . . . ( we had good insurance) I'm proud to say the prevention worked. Outside the first floor the water was about 2' higher than "Allison" and about 30" higher than the first floor but the flood waters did not enter the building. Too bad I sold when I left, I hear the prices just went up again. In drone pictures the building looks like an island.

I'm in Austin but work in IT for Houston Methodist Hospital. Most of my team was fortunate but more important, none of them or their families were hurt. We can replace material objects, we can't replace people. Only two were affected by the flooding, one not to bad, the other extensively. Methodist put up 7.5 million of their own money for the employees to file claims for assistance, paid everyone who couldn't make it to work their full pay check and gave significant bonuses for those that were stuck sleeping and working within the hospital system. In all my years, I've never worked for such a generous business. Austin wasn't hit with much more than several inches of rain but it was spread over 4 days and arrived in bands giving it time to run off and keep flooding minimal. I cannot imagine the horror folks in the coastal areas are faced with. I LOVE the ocean, but you'll never see me building my home near water. I'm high and dry and will visit the ocean, not build where it can visit me. And now Florida...

Makes a person just want to get on the tractor with the entire Beatles collection playing and work hard enough to forget the worldly issues.

Around here folks are saying SJRA should have started releasing water when we learned of high rainfall amounts, not after! Especially my flooded co worker that lives in River Plantation (RP).
I'm still waiting on the Allstate claims agent.

Exactly correct Brandi. The SJRA let the lake blow past "full pool". And did not meaningfully mitigate the rapid level increase until the max critical operating level was reached, and that is when they had to over react and dump about 100% more water than they should have.

Had they started letting out about 40,000 cfs Sunday morning, a full drinking water pool level could have been maintained while allowing for a more managed flow downstream.

Sorry about your friend in RP. We pulled a house apart in there too...

Question for a Texas newbie... I'm clearing a ton of 3 - 7 year old mesquite from my property. Digging the stumps out will take forever with the 2538 TLB. What can I do to kill them without contaminating the surrounding soil. I'm told Remedy and diesel fuel in a 50/50 mix and coat the cuttings fresh... Does this work? Does it harm the soil? Thanks all.

25% Remedy / 75% Diesel.

Wait till March to start with the diesel. During the winter months Ive cut mesquite and applied the diesel (I use 100% diesel) but it doesn't work well. Wait until Spring.
