I sliced that big pod with a knife to see if it was tough. It was nice and tender, so I ate most of it raw. Do you suppose that my eating that pod means the other okra will think it's unsafe to produce? Hope not!;)
I have never ate orka raw, just fried. Now you got my mouth-a-waterin'.:licking:
I do remember eating raw potatoes and cucumber in the garden.

I give them a quick start with a lot of rabbit manure

Best fertilizer you can get, in my opinion. When I was raising rabbits, I had a rig to let all manure fall from the cages and slide or roll down into a 5 gallon bucket at the end of the row. I poured that on a screen to dry, then ran it through a little 5 hp Craftsman chipper/shredder and had my own dry almost powdered fertilizer.

Bird I have a friend that raises rabbits,, he has hundreds of them.. sell to some wholesaler up north,, I can have all the manure I want as long as I shovel it..it does have a smell to it.. He uses to sell it but people wanted it bagged and cleaned.. Then grip about the price,, Now they grip because he quit selling it.. Some people are never happy.. and I agree I think it is the best all natural fertilizer you can get when mixed with washed sea weed,, But to much will make your tomatoes bust/crack/split what ever they call it.. It will make everything else grow big and fast.:). Lou

Brandi, I don't eat it raw on a regular basis, but it is tasty and a good way to check how tender your pods are and how they'll taste. I eat jars and jars of pickled okra and lots of okra-tomato gumbo (no meat) and a little fried. I love fried, but really try to limit my intake. As long as I eat fried okra only a half-dozen times a year, I don't think I'm overdoing it. The fact that I eat a plate full each of those 6 times is something I don't think is necessary to reveal my doctor.

When I planted orka in the past, I usually found if over 4 or 5 inches long on the vine, they were too hard. Now I wonder if that Bar-be-que place in town, that has fried orka, is open this afternoon?

bindian; Some varieties are better than others. I grow an heirloom that can get 6-8 inches long without getting too hard. I try to pick them at 4-5 inches in length. The variety is a very heavy producer too! I have lot of little 1 inch pods on the plants now, so when it gets HOT, okra will be happy!

When we went to Northwestern University Traffic Institute in 1971-72, living in Des Plaines, IL, we were surprised, and disappointed that we could not find blackeyed peas in any of the grocery stores. And most of the northerners in the class had never eaten them. So, when we came home for Christmas, I bought a case of 24 cans of blackeyed peas to take back to Illinois with us. And New Years Eve we had a big party, potluck dinner, etc. and my wife fixed a big pot of blackeyed peas with diced ham, expecting to have enough left for dinner New Years Day. But every bite of it was eaten that night.

Bird- Sometimes we do have left-over BEP's, then I use this recipe for a change of pace. Cook all the ingredients except the BEP and when they're done ad them to your left-overs and let them cook a little while. Bingo- a hearty soup that makes a great meal when served with Cornbread.

CHARLIE’S BLACKEYED PEA SOUP
This is a great soup for New Years Day. In Texas we always eat Blackeyed peas on New Years Day for Good Luck, and this soup is a great for the day after the celebration and to eat at half time of the football games. It’s best served with cornbread or crusty Italian bread with green onions on the side.
-Charlie
1# BLACKEYED PEAS- clean and soak overnight

Sounds good, Charlie. All my life I've liked a wide variety of soups and cornbread.

Charlie,
That sounds real good. I think we will try "Charlie's Black Eyed Pea Soup" before new years.
Up here the tradition on New Years is to hold money in your hand at the stroke of midnight to have a prosperous new year and to eat sauerkraut to clean everything out to start the new year. So far, it has worked well.:D
