Stump grinder build

Your thread is helping me get re-motivated to work on mine, I have some stumps I need to remove before fall overseeding so hopefully i can get to working on it soon.

Your stump grinder looks real good, I built one about 3 years ago went by a youtube video by Billy Taylor, will try to post a photo of it but it might work. 02.jpg04.JPG

That looks Great! how does it work?
The heat and humidity has discouraged me from working on mine these days. I'm so close I can taste the wood chips and dirt but it will have to wait until the heat breaks.

It works real well, I'm using a Massey Ferguson 1428V compact tractor 28HP, had to plumb remotes in the rear to use it, on pine goes thru like butter oak its ruff on it but it was dri oak, ground up about 3 large oak's and several pines have not used it in a while, good luck on your grinder.

Nice work, that is a 6,000 $ CAD piece of equipment from bauma light. So How much do you have into it??

I’ve got more into it than I’d hoped.
1050$ gear box and PTO shaft with slip clutch
500$ 6 pairs of green teeth. (Pockets teeth and bolts)
200$ steel tubes and flat bar.
250$ laser cut parts including the 19”dia 5/8 thick flywheel
300$ hydraulic cylinders, hoses and fittings.
Wow. I’ve really got to stop looking at American web sites for prices before I start a project.
Those figures are in Canadian pesos

According to those figures you could've bought a DR or save more by renting, but wheres the fun in that, good thing you dont add your time in since you get $50.00/hr.

I would never have bought one at any price, nor would I have rented one.
That said I do have a bunch of stumps and it was a project that let me play with all my toys... tractor, lathe, mill and welder. That alone was nearly worth the price. But I may look a little harder for a project that fits those criteria that’s a little less spendy next time.
Oh and at $50/hour I’d fired my *** long ago for Lilly gagging.

Meleon,
You have a lot more than I have in mine, mine is 2015 US prices, gear box $160 on ebay, spline adaptor for wheel $30 on ebay, 8 pairs of green teeth. (Pockets teeth and bolts) $320 on sale at Baileys, cylinders-drive shift and slip clutch about $300 Agri Supply, flywheel $160 local machine shop, about $100 hoses and fittings, had most of the steel used scrap -for instance the guard is built out of electrical box covers and 2 blower housings liners. Maybe have $1100 to $1200 over a 3 year period.

Sorry to say this but you are only 200$ away from a woodland mills grinder but you learned something along the way and have a sense of pride from having built it with your own two hands. plus your design is more efficient than the woodland mills which is a compromise to save costs.

Building it is half the fun then you get some seat time in the tractor. then you get to fix your mistakes when it breaks or you figure out a better way to build it.

There was a used but new condition woodland mills grinder for sale locally for 1200$
I didn’t really care for the design. It looks like there would be too much back and forth.

I remembered I have a full 4x8 sheet of 5/16 sitting out back in the steel pile, needs a bit of cleaning as it's been sitting outside for a few years, I dragged it up to the shop this evening. Now I just need to start drawing up the parts in CAD and order some greenteeth, a pto shaft, and the cylinders (once I figure out my dimensions).

Im looking forward to see what you come up with!
At 5/16 it should be heavy duty

It'll pretty much look like yours for the most part lol, not a whole lot of ways to make these.
I think I have all the metal I need, just wish had a piece of 1 or 1.125 plate for the flywheel but I'll make do with 2 peices of .625 faced off and put together.

What length pto shaft did you use? I just ordered my teeth today, they are backordered, says 2-3 weeks for delivery.

It seems everything is taking forever to move around these days.
My PTO shaft is 36” joint to joint when compressed.
Seems to be a good fit for mine at least.
I can’t wait to follow your build. (And get back to mine)

Added a couple of gussets today, added a kick stand.
Got it put back together, and gave it a couple of test runs. I think I need to put an orifice in the cylinders.

I would recommend one way adjustable needle valves for both sides of the swing cylinder. This allows you to tune the speed of both the extend and retract to be the same or have it slow in only 1 direction if your only cutting on 1 side of the wheel so you can increase production. The height cylinder could probably get by with a fixed orifice.

Any more progress? I've been collecting parts and making the CAD drawings for thr parts, hopefully will have some time to start cutting and welding soon.

I’ve actually been using it as is. I drove my little 4310 45 minutes each way to my mothers house last weekend and ground roughly 30 stumps. (Hurricane Dorian carnage) took me most of the day and left me with a sore neck, but it will make a huge difference when it comes to mowing the grass.

I still need to make a hinged shroud to catch the debris, it throws chips incredibly far.

I picked up some clips to mount the hydraulic hoses to tidy them up. But haven’t mounted them yet.

My wheel cuts in both directions. So I won’t need to have it go faster in one direction. (Since I’m cheap I’ll likely just suffer through feathering the controls)

I can’t wait to see what you come up with.
