Dont fret, this will not be going away forever.
My next step will be to back off the nut and try a little grinding to see if that works......

I don't know if there is something to wedge against, but my method of removing rotary cutter assemblies is to use two opposing pairs of 2" oak wedges placed on either side of the shaft. The purpose of using two pairs is so the force of the wedges is even on both sides of the shaft and less likely to bind. Driving two wedges against each other also makes the force of the wedge more uniform and less binding.

I didn't see any mention of the set screw through the side of the hub. I hope that wasn't the cause of the broken shaft.
