Take that chain off so you Can You can even try to turn the Eng. Sounds like that might pushing it the way this thread is going.

I believe that the running rotation of the engine is clockwise if you stand in front of the tractor and look at the front of the engine. Someone with a YM135/155/165 please check on that.....

Likely clockwise. YM240 a slightly larger Yanmar from the same era, is clockwise rotation as seen from the front.

I painted a down-arrow on its generator pulley shield that sticks out slightly from the left side of its hood.

Ok, what is the trick to removing chain coupler? I found the master link and separated that, now what?

With the clip and that side, side plate removed, with luck you will have room to slid the rest of the master link out the other way as it goes past center the inner plates will come out.
Here is a pic of a disassembled one;

good start, a new master link is very inexpensive.
A little pry bar or hammer and punch may be needed.
If all else fails cut it out and replace it.

I tried a long screwdriver and put it on the back link and tried tapping it out, no such luck

I suspect heat and lubricant are your buddies on this one. If you have reasonable access to the key link side, I would try a long punch.

I may end up draining radiator and taking it off for easier access
