I believe I gave about $560 for mine last year with a 18" bar, no accessories.

I bought mine at the same time as a a BR 600 Magnum and I think that I got something like $75 off on the deal. I love them both. I've already put a lot of tanks through the saw and I'm hoping to brave the snow this weekend to spend another day cutting and splitting.

Recently purchased a MS291 new @ $424 otd w/ a six pack of 2cyc stihl oil and a 4 year warranty. My first choise was a MS261 but for my needs I felt like I got a good deal. Only drawback was I wanted a 16 or 18 inch bar and had to buy this one with a 20 inch bar . Used /ran it for two days now and really like the MS291. I 'am aware that the MS291 is more like a ranch/ small acreage homeowner saw and MS261 is in Stihl's pro category.

I bought a MS 261 C two weeks ago. It was it was $569 plus tax. I got a 3/8 lo pro bar and chain on. They had to change the sprocket plus I kept the .325 sprocket that comes on the saw. They also had to remove 2 drive links from the chain. Most dealers will do better if you tell them you want a cash price.

I don't think I'd want a 20" bar on a 261. I does not have enough power to pull it IMO. The dealers here had the 261 equipped with a 18'' b/c. The saw was balanced nicely with the 18''. I was worried mine might be too light on the nose with the 16'' 3/8 lo pro on it but it is balanced good.

If you get a 261 be sure it has a 3 position switch because that makes it a Mtronic model.

Mine cost $560, and I have a 16 inch bar on it. It has been a good saw, but I bought a Echo when it was in the shop, and the Echo is a pretty good saw, at 1/2 the price.

I have heard of a number of people changing the MS241 and MS261 to the 3/8 lo pro saying it cuts better than stock .325. Hopefully not much of an up charge? I should look at the two saw chains side by side.
