Re: Spencer\'s Pole Barn Project

Robert, we may be out of step with the times./w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif I had no idea that OSB could cost more than plywood since I've never priced it and wouldn't use it for anything, but several years ago when I was helping my brother build his house, he intended to use it until I told him my opinion of it and he decided to go with plywood instead; said the plywood only cost just a little bit more than the OSB. However, in this area, there is an unbelievable boom in the construction of new homes and it looks to me like all the builders are using OSB (and it's raining right now; has been nearly all day, so I feel sorry for the folks who are going to be buying those new $140K to $500k homes).

Re: Spencer\'s Pole Barn Project

Market dictates price. People started buying OSB like crazy so companies started charging more.

Re: Spencer\'s Pole Barn Project

I must be on the wrong part of the planet. Here OSB is about half price compared to plywood.

Re: Spencer\'s Pole Barn Project

Lumber prices vary by location. If there is a lot of construction in an area, lumber prices are high. Around here though plywood and osb are pretty close to the same. Some shipments plywood might cost a few cents more, other shipments osb will cost more.

Thanks everybody for your responses. I don't have the time to reply to all of them right now. I got a surprise today, see the attachment.

Re: Spencer\'s Pole Barn Project

This information about OSB is very timely for me because we will start construction on my new house soon and the builder is planning to use OSB. Let me make that WAS going to use OSB. I have heard nothing good about it and plenty bad, so it looks like I will specify plywood on the roof of my house. I am so glad to find this out now and not after the fact!

ScottAR - "I must be on the wrong part of the planet. Here OSB is about half price compared to plywood."

Same here, actually OSB is usually much less than half the price of plywood around here. My house has OSB and it sags between each rafter. Someday I'm going to have to shell out some bucks and get the whole thing replaced.

Re: Spencer\'s Pole Barn Project

Ok, here is where it gets tricky. I take the truss off the boom pole and rest it on the ladder. Then I get up on the next truss and pull it upright.

Re: Spencer\'s Pole Barn Project

So I only got three trusses set before it got dark. I had a buddy lined up to help today but had to cancel because I thought I might have to watch my beautiful 2 year old daughter while my wife went into work. She ended up not going to work so I just set these three by myself.

Re: Spencer\'s Pole Barn Project

I sure have enjoyed your series of pictures and progress. I find myself looking daily for new posts.
Does that truss sitting outside on the ground go to the outside of the poles on the end?

pajoube, yes it does go on the outside of the poles. I will probably leave it off for a while.

Re: Spencer\'s Pole Barn Project

Spencer - How high are your walls? That "boom pole mounted on FEL" setup is sure handy! With all that leverage, do you have any trouble with the tractor balancing?

Re: Spencer\'s Pole Barn Project

I just finished a pole barn, and I tied two trusses together with 2x4 "x" brace in the center and used notched 2x4's for spacers on cord and rafter and then hoisted them into place. bcs

Re: Spencer\'s Pole Barn Project

Mosey, the walls on the main section will be 12 feet high after the concrete is poured. The walls on the 16' by 16' shop addition will be 10" higher than that. I agree the boom pole is extremely handy. I have not had any balancing issues at all with it.
