Yes, it is a good idea to coat the ends with something to minimize end checking. Drying happens much faster from end grain than from the flat sides or edges of the board (that's what trees do - transport water and nutrients up and down the trunk...) so it can dry too fast and lead to splits and checking that can ruin part or even all of the board. Some people say latex paint works, but there is also something made specifically for this called Anchorseal, IIRC. And make sure you strap down or weight down the pile over your stickers to help keep it flat while drying.

What makes Anchorseal so much better than latex paint? I have always used white latex paint with good success. Never tried Anchorseal to compare.

I didn't say Anchorseal was better than latex paint. Anchorseal is what lots of full time sawyers use. Some people are funny and won't buy custom cut (high $$$) wood with latex paint on the ends.

What is the difference between supports versus stickers?

Stickers are the same species of wood as being cut and stacked, so they won't stain the wood being dried. They are usually 1x1 inch and go between layers of stacked wood. Supports are what keeps it all off the ground. The higher the supports the better for airflow. My supports are at least 4x6s. Sometimes two pallets side by side for support of shorter boards. I started making 8 and 10 foot wide forklift pallets for easy moving of the those cut lengths.

No offense... just wondering. Latex paint for me is basically free. Just leftover house paint and I use a junky roller. Seems the only purpose is to seal the ends. Surely doesn't have to look good. I do like seeing the edge grain though. Is Anchorseal clear?
