Take it easy... It's not that we're being disrespectfull intentionally, We simply don't understand...

I'll have a try at representing about 3/4 of the male race. (yikes!) For men, a hair cut is more or less an obligation, like takin' out the trash or feeding the dog. We want it finished as fast as possible, and we don't want to pay much either. Cut is cut, if its even and so on all the better. 10-20 minutes max and waiting is not good.

I'm taking a stab in the dark, but I'm guessing for a lot of women a haircut is a bit of a treat, a bit of pampering I guess. I speculate your paying for the experience, a bottle of fancy drinking water, massage of this or that, get your hair did, nails done, come out of there lookin' good and feeling great.

Just a different point of view about life is all. I hope I was informative, or at least amusing... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I believe that going to the grocery store or the barber for a man is looked at as an obligation.

To a woman it's a social event. You couldn't just power through a womens cut like a man's. Just look in the shower. I have 1 bottle of shampoo. The wife has one for high humidity, low humidity, winter, summer and on and on. Reinforced the wall behind the shower for the Vidal Sassoon racks.

Hair to a women is sacred. Your walking a fine line when you go in this direction with a saloon.

So when is Hooter's going to open a saloon for men? Be worth $23 to me!!! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Bob,
I gave myself a hair cut the other day... just grabbed the old pony tail and whacked a foot off about 4 inches below the collar with one snip. The kids loved it and it was free, although the conversation wasn't very long... went something like this...

"Dad! What are you doing?"
"Getting a hair cut."
"Is it gonna hurt?"
"Nope!"
SNIP
"MOM! Dad cut his haaaiiirrrrr!"

Always good for a laugh every couple of years. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Sure we are dissing women, just like women diss men. You ought to hear what women say about men in the salons /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Used to have a small office next door to a salon with thin walls in between. What I overheard was both intertaining and a bit scary sometimes /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I got some Wahl clippers about 7 years ago after I moved and was working a boatload of overtime. Either couldnt get to a barber, or when I could they wanted 12 bucks to do a crew cut.

I dont use a blade cover right around the ears, a #1 does the beard, mustash, and a little farther out around the ears. A #2 does the sides and back, and a #3 on top. Good to go in about 5 min. Get the wife to square the back every other time.

I take my boys to a barber shop and not a stylist. The reason is that barbers are getting harder and harder to find. I want my boys to have a memory of what a real haircut expericence is like. Mine happens to raise hefiers, make maple syrup and loves to talk about tractors. He's also a vet and tells things just like they are. You don't like it leave. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
He has a great business but will retire in two years. His daughter is taking over the business. She is younger, cuter, has a nose ring and my oldest boy 8 likes her to cut his hair. Imagine that. The youngest says Tom's his barber but can be convinced to take her chair with a well timed lolly pop. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Have a great day!

Are we really showing disrespect for women or are we simply pointing out the cultural differences between the experiences that men and women have?

We both (men & women) get our hair cut. Yet I have never seen a "barber shop" (nor would I choose to frequent one if I found it) that did peticures. Men go it with the intent of getting something done that NEEDS to be done. Women seem (I may be wrong) to go in with the intent of enjoying the experience and they turn it into a social event.

Those differences are reasonable to point out.

It is not unlike the mystery of the bathroom. When couples go out to dinner or a club together and a guy needs to use the bathroom, he simply goes. No public announcement or need to gather up a support group to achieve the desired result of bodily relief. Women, on the other hand, turn the simple act of going to the restroom into a social event, and the outcome is not bodily fluid, it is a group converstation about what is going on, which guy is a pig, which guy is cute . . .

Again, these are differences between men & women, it shows no disrespect.

Bob,
Seeing how's you are new to all this "styling salon" stuff... I only have one major piece of advice for you. Don't make the same mistake I did. While trying to go with the flow of the female conversation, in the middle of my "styling" job, and actually thinking I was being polite for bringing up the subject, I asked the stylist when she was "due"?? I couldn't have pushed the lump that developed in my throat on down with a broom stick when she said "HUH"??? Luckily for me, she didn't have the sense of humor that I do, or my head would have looked pretty stupid when I left that shop. You're tempting fate my good man! Stick with the barber shops...and stop playing with dynamite! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I consider the trip to the she-she-la-la salon to be a 1 time (mis)adventure. I'll be back to the regular barber shops, or more likely to my cousin's chair in her basement the next time I need a $10 clip.

But I will say, because I didn't say it earlier, my hair does look good! Not sure that it justifies double +++ the price. Oh, and I found out something else from the stylist, apparently I have great "wave"

What the heck is "wave"?
