Anyone know about 3D printing?

I have a small part to print, and the website that prints asks for two variable to be selected. It will be an exhaust adapter for a new coffee roaster...ABS plastic using FDM process. The website asks for:
- % Infill, from 20% to 100%, and
- Layer Height, from 100 um to 300 um.

Not sure what these mean, exactly.

Thanks, these are very helpful...this is the website where I was considering ordering the print job, too. I should have gone to their home page...they have a wealth of info. Problem, now that I know what Infill is, is I don't want any infill.

You can get by with less infill as you thicken the shell for many parts. Depends on your part. the layers are how thick each layer is, giving the part more resolution. I have found that these printers are good for prototyping, so you can hold something in your hand, but usually not great for anything that would have any force that you have to depend on. I made a flange adapter for a portable roll around A/C unit that I connected an aluminum dryer exhaust hose to. Then ran the heat out a gap in the window. We have many of these where I work. I had 3 under my domain, but a new guy has horded all but 1 into his domain. I have a MakerBot 2X replicator left, that has never been that good of a machine since the start. You can buy a good one, and build it yourself fairly cheap, or a really nice one (build it yourself for $750). Original Prusa i3 MK3 - Prusa3D - 3D Printers from Josef Průša

Maybe I spoke too soon. This morning, my wife told met there was a rabbit in our backyard. I walked out on the deck and it came right to the step, stopped, and listened to me a minute, then slowly went under the deck where she always went in and out. So apparently it was Miss Bunny instead of a stranger passing through.

Yea, Miss Bunny lives!

Bunny is back!

I found some young tomato plants in Caldwell Texas this morning. (about 37 miles away). We were going over there anyway after calling around to local Tractor Supplys for a particular type of baby chicks. They had them. Gold Sex Links. Who name's chicken breeds???

Waiting for some energy to go plant the Celebrity and Better Boy tomato plants. Did the tilling yesterday.

Drew, good luck on your planting day. Hope you have plenty of help to come out. That's a lot of taters.

Eric, glad that at least one of your chores isn't too hard. My friends are touring C. S. Lewis' home today.

Don, sounds like retirement literally means re-tired-again. Glad it isn't work for you. Interesting neighbors.

Rich sorry about the race engine. Was it a 2 stroke or 4 stroke? Gearing is critical from one track to the next to optimize the engine's powerband. It is so easy to over rev in the heat of a race.

Prayers for healing.

Stay warm you folks up north.

Good that your Bunny is back. None around here. There was a lot of them. I believe the fox and coyotes have done them in.

David/Sodamo, fun to watch your project come along. Looks great.
I keep looking at those metal roofs you are putting on
and all I can think of is what happens in high winds? Will they stay on?
seems that wind would get under them and rip things apart, like Buckeye's barn.
Short of hurricanes, do you get a lot of wind there?
Does the open nature help the wind go through without issue?

Good points Drew. As we all know, Mother Nature wins.
Can only hope that an abundance of nails, screws, Simpson ties all work to do their job. People loose roofs here, usually making the news, as a freakish event, single instance in a neighborhood. some during extremely bad weather.

We do get wind but nothing to severe. i think highest gusts wehave seen in the. 40mph range, not uncommon to be in 20’s during a strong.

Not sure about the openness, but hope it is an advantage. I do wonder if the airfoil effect is more pronounced with this flat sheeting vs a pattern. We’ll see.

Well, that just means they'll use more material, and maybe cost you a bit more.

A friend of mine was able to get a part made for me at a local community college from a file I found online. Unfortunately, the model wasn't very accurate, and it required a lot of rework, but it was better than nothing. If you have some way of verifying the model is accurate before you have it printed, it might save you a lot of work later...

The13 x 26 patio cover here used to be just a shade structure, and it was pretty flimsy. I converted it to a steel cover, and the company that made the steel published an installation booklet that went into construction details for the supporting structure and the screw spacing for expected winds. Like David, I used strong ties for the rafters, and lag bolts for the braces. There were steel anchors already for the 4x6 vertical supports, but they weren't attached to the concrete. I used the FEL to lift the whole mess up high enough to get a lag bolt in there, then screwed it to the upright. I've seen 55 MPH sustained winds here, and I bet the gusts have been higher, so that guidance so far has been pretty good. I used the data for 100 MPH winds...

It was about 45F yesterday when the builder was here yesterday, with a drizzle. I was holding a big golf umbrella over us, and I had to keep switching hands because I didn't have gloves on. That kind of temperature and humidity is COLD, I don't care where you're from. I don't blame you, Drew, for bundling up, or even using a heat wrap to keep that bum neck of yours comfortable. The price to pay if you don't is just too high! I can also tell you that the woodstove felt really good back inside when we were all done!:cloud9:

Good Afternoon Everyone!!!

It's been a long day. I need a cold room in order to sleep; the colder the better; but at some point I will notice the cold like this morning. Since losing our central propane heating last Winter I now set the thermostats down to 60º to keep the baseboard antifreeze/water moving. It was 57º. I have a HVAC Service contract. I called. They came. They left. I have a few stockpiled parts here, but unfortunately not the failed boiler ignitor. They will be back Monday. Until then no central propane heat and no hot water. I did not anticipate burning much more wood. I have just enough kindling and woodworking scraps which should last to next week when hopefully I can bend the knee and break down some kindling if needed. Nasty mixed winter weather tonight changing over to rain tomorrow. Until Monday I need to make sure the indoor tap water keeps flowing.

On the + We are going to friends tonight for dinner. We have not seen them in a long time so it should be fun and no dirty dishes with which to deal. Unfortunately my personal hygiene has lapsed "somewhat" :embarrassed: since the "knee"; and I am now a tad "gamey." A couple of cold ones and nobody will care.:)

I am happy to read that Mrs. Bunny has returned.

I am somewhat distracted today (i.e. no weather BS).

I hope that everyone is having a decent day today

My + thoughts, wishes, and prayers.

Late to the party today, hit the all clubs breakfast, wow was that place packed, about 300 people. Thanks for the congratulations, it’s been a fast paced year for sure.
Cloudy and upper 40s again, rain tonight, warm tomorrow, but 9 of 14 days are predicted to be below normal.

Wingsprd, I have trouble with 2D printing!

Good day and God bless.
