Having decided to relocate and enlarge my well pump house I am trying to figure out how best to provide electricity inside the shed. Currently my pump is powered from an outside breaker box connected directly to the meter. It is a 200-amp main service so I have plenty of capacity so here are my options as I see them. I can run conduit from the existing CB panel and run individual 12/3 wires inside the shed for lights, pumps, filtration and heat. OR, I can run a 60-amp 6/3 wire inside the shed into another breaker box and distribute from there. In either case the conduit/wire length from the outside to the inside of the shed will be <20'.

All things considered I would prefer to have a separate CB box inside the shed but would like to hear your opinions. I understand local code dictates but what would be considered best practice for this type of hook-up?

I would definitely prefer the separate breaker panel inside the shed. It just makes life a whole lot easier if the breakers are where you can easily reach them. Just be sure that the feed you run is big enough to support everything you need now and in the future.

I agree;

that said you just have to be sure to treat the NEW panel as it's all own including grounding and bonding as required. If there is a dirt or concrete/gravel floor then also have GFICs as required.
