No, many "use to be" direct injection, the pre chambers came along with emission BS.

You have that backwards, IDI was more common early on, DI is the norm for modern tier 4 final.

IDI runs on a lower injection pressure and are typically lower cost in the fuel delivery side, they also can be more tolerant of fuels.

Kubota use to offer both DI and IDI in the same series/displacement, now due to emissions requirement pretty much everything common rail DI except for the lower HP engines that fall under the 19Kw threshold.

If I had my rather I prefer DI, but I've never had a problem with my IDI's. The worst engine I have for starting (with a starting aid at least) is my forklift with a Nissan SD25, takes about 30sec of glow plug at least and might take 2 tries below freezing. It also has about 6k hrs of most likely hard work.

The Nissan SD are a good old design, licenced from Mercedes Benz if I'm not mistaken.

They are stout for sure, mine is in an 80's Nissan forklift so I'm sure its had a rough life, biggest problems I'm finding it parts availability is a bit scarce in the US. They are very popular in Australia though!

Lots of Datsun/Nissan pickups and vans used it and a few large sedans mostly used as taxis her in Norway in the late seventies and eighties.

There were some trucks with them in the US also but not nearly the numbers as other places, most of those have rotted into the ground now anyways so are pretty rare to find.
I have a friend that works for Nissan and can usually get any part if its available, there pretty much nothing available here.

Took a while to find a valve cover gasket for my forklift, i would have had to pay a lot to get one from Australia but I managed to find one from a forklift parts supply company.

You mean, "if there are glow plugs in the engine"...

Some direct injection diesels have a glow plug in the intake tract...

SR

Different entirely. Heaters for intake air. They are not in the precombustion chamber. Glow plugs do not survive in a direct injection combustion chamber.

Not entirely true, there are a number of DI engines with glow plugs in the combustion chamber.
The Duramax and Powerstroke engines are the first that come to mind.

Maybe check up on you information sources. The direct is more efficient and usually has higher compression ratios. The pre combustion is more tolerant of fuel quality.

My Ford has the heater in the intake stream. One reason NOT to use ether. Unless, of course, you want a face full of flames or exploding air filter(s).

I've never had a problem starting the old Ford and until recently, the heater wasn't even wired or working. I installed a new one with wiring during my restore. Anxious to see if it really makes a difference down here in the South. But, I don't have it running yet. It's been too cold or wet to finish the painting and assembly.

Glad I started this thread. I have learned more about diesel engine design than I expected.
