You have that backwards, IDI was more common early on, DI is the norm for modern tier 4 final.No, many "use to be" direct injection, the pre chambers came along with emission BS.

IDI runs on a lower injection pressure and are typically lower cost in the fuel delivery side, they also can be more tolerant of fuels.
Kubota use to offer both DI and IDI in the same series/displacement, now due to emissions requirement pretty much everything common rail DI except for the lower HP engines that fall under the 19Kw threshold.
If I had my rather I prefer DI, but I've never had a problem with my IDI's. The worst engine I have for starting (with a starting aid at least) is my forklift with a Nissan SD25, takes about 30sec of glow plug at least and might take 2 tries below freezing. It also has about 6k hrs of most likely hard work.
