Day Time Running Lights!

the day drl's are mandatory- is the day insurance companies stop giving out discounts for them. I dont think its really that hard to program or install a switch to turn off lights via switch when needed but automatically come back on when car restarts. This would be ideal I think. get rid of the power locks/windows/etc and give me DRL's with a switch to turn off. (need lights to be off when car is running for heat on those chilly nights at outdoor movie drive ins. yes they still exists)

I dont know about current vehicles, but the '04 and '05 Chevrolet Express 3500 15 passenger vans that they had at the hotel I used to work for only turned them on when the van was in gear. They also had a "turn off DRLs" momentary position on the headlight switch that let you shut them off until you turned the van off.

Oh NO!!! Now I like the idea of the DRLs, but I sure don't want them enough to give up the power door locks, windows, and mirrors because I USE all of those things.

They have been law up here since 1990. Not too sure why it has not been made mandatory in the USA.

Yep, my last trip to Alaska was in 1991, and while my 1989 one ton Chevy didn't have them, I noticed the signs along the way requiring headlights on all the time, so that was no problem to just turn them on.

I agree with you completely. Seems people like to complain for no reason. Safety is no joke, and DRL's are safety equipment. Leave the luxury options for the vehicle buyer to opt out of.

Not on mine you didn't...I have never run as a cyclopse..

I personally have no problem with running lights. I really don't see how everyone is seeing this as some infringement of rights...Good grief. It's a safety thing and I have no problem with it...Kinda like airbags etc...Now the OBD2 insurance monitoring thing, I have a serious problem there and I won't even think about signing up for that one no matter what the savings...Running lights don't pay attention to my driving habits, those do...The black box thing is another matter...Who knows where that will go.

I didnt mean to say give it up completely. All I meant was I don't need it- its nice to know its an option. I would love to bee able to have better control of buying what I want instead what dealer buys in advance with goodies he thinks public wants and sell to us. Its just too bad that options means its cheaper to get it built in then add later. Whats wrong with being able to add anything you want later with no additional cost and save money on labor. - anyway that is another thread topic I'm afraid.

The NHTSA released a study a few years ago that found no statistical evidence that DRL's reduced crashes.

As for the idea of lights turning with your windshield wipers; Ford has had this feature for a few years on their vehicles when you have the automatic headlights activated. About 30 seconds after turning on your wipers, the lights automatically come on.

I think its more of a difference between what we feel the purpose of our government is. If a person thinks they are somehow safer with their lights, wipers, snow tires on..... go ahead and put em on. No need to the government to pass a law to tell me so.

A legislative session where NO new laws are passed is a successful legislative session to me.

Actually, snow tires are law in Quebec, and may become law in Ontario. All season tires are garbage when it comes to winter, and are totally common sense. They are three season tires at best.
