I think that DRL's are the best thing since sliced bread.... mandatory in the States is OK with me. I even put the circuits in my non-GM vehicles... ANOTHER THING them Canucks do right..... eh? :)

How about just making sure you drive safely and there are laws against driving stupid?

Look closely and slow down if need be.

Or is it just one more government regulation because you don't think people can take care of themselves?

amen.

My truck has DRL and nothing annoys me more than having no option to turn my lights off when approaching people at night, like a camping setting or approaching a house with people sleeping inside. This mandating bs is beyond abhorrent. People can't even be polite anymore. What's next, mandated fog horn when approaching water?

I don't mind running lights, but I own the vehicle and should be the one deciding when they are used, not the "I've never cooked a meal in my life" politicians or, frankly, any of you.

DRL's were put on vehicles so the other guy can see you. They were conceived back when the majority of traveling was on two lanes. Jerks coming the other way pulling out in front of you because they could not see you in the summer haze or dusk.... and you would have to dive to the shoulder/try not to flip in the ditch to get out of his way.... Letting you see openings so you could safely pass. It was a jungle out there... and that was WHEN MOST PEOPLE ACTUALLY KNEW HOW TO PASS A VEHICLE.... We were all zooming around in out Wide Track Pontiacs [ except for the Canadian ones that were built on a narrower frame ]...... :)

The NHTSA released a study a few years ago that found no statistical evidence that DRL's reduced crashes.

As for the idea of lights turning with your windshield wipers; Ford has had this feature for a few years on their vehicles when you have the automatic headlights activated. About 30 seconds after turning on your wipers, the lights automatically come on.

There you go, throwing "facts" into an argument, it only confuses people, well probably not; seems minds are already made up.

As someone else from Canada already mentioned, we've had mandatory DRLs since 1990 (or was it 1991?). For whatever reason, the idea met a lot of opposition in the U.S. (just like motorcycle helmet laws). One problem with DRLs is that some manufacturers feel taillights should also be included and some don't.

Never liked tail lights on during bright sunshine. Still remember the years ago when the Ford cars had 'milky' tail light and head light plastic problems. Couldn't tell much difference if they had their tail lamp or brake lamps on... Same with dirty tail lamps... That is why I don't like ' turn your headlamps on in the daytime ' stuff.....

Correct on both parts!! Year 1990, some were called 1991 model, and some were 1990.

Actually, snow tires are law in Quebec, and may become law in Ontario. All season tires are garbage when it comes to winter, and are totally common sense. They are three season tires at best.

should be the law EVERYWHERE. Wish it was here as well.

Alot of the "rah rah freedom" types on here seem to forget that people are CHEAP.. and if given the option they WONT buy winter tires unless forced.. I got no problem with "YOU" running all-season (summer) tires in winter so long as you can guarantee me that you wont take me out as a result of your cheapness/stupidity when winter comes and you shoot off into the ditch. We all know that is an impossible guarantee to make, therefore legislation is required to force you to have at least the proper tires to be somewhat safe.

Several years ago there was a young girl that went off the road here killing her 2 children.. the cause? worn, "all season" tires on a slushy day. Im sure she would gladly give the several hundred dollars for winters if she could have her kids back today.

Actually the NHTSA study found some benefit to DRL's when it comes to trucks and vans: " a reduction in light trucks' and vans' involvement in two-vehicle crashes by a statistically significant 5.7%"
