With all the gov regulations and safety add-on's WHY aren't day time running lights mandatory on new vehicles????
I can't count the times when if I had not taken a second look I would have pulled out on an approching vehicle that was hard to see because it blended with the landscape.
It's not an expensive add on. Some of the imports even have LED's.

I'm with you on that one. Neither of my vehicles have them, so I use the headlights instead. My Toyota then dims its expensive little dedicated dash clock to a point that its barely readable. It's brilliance is not connected to the dash lighting dimmer.:mad::mad: At least on my Dodge, there is a setting which forces all the dash lighting to full on, making everything readable in broad daylight.

I know on my F250 it is possible to have the dealer hook up his computer to my truck and enable the daytime running lights. Apparently they are enabled standard on fleet vehicles but not on the consumer versions. I agree they improve visibility. I believe all vehicles must have them by law in Canada, I don't know why we don't have a similar requirement here.

For a while there it seemed that all of the new cars had them...I dont see it as much anymore...My Hummer and my last 3 GMC's had them.

They should also include a lights-on when the windshield wipers are on for more than 1 minute or so...I hate driving in a downpour trying to watch for idiots who don't turn their lights on..Pretty dangerous actually.

How about just making sure you drive safely and there are laws against driving stupid?

Look closely and slow down if need be.

Or is it just one more government regulation because you don't think people can take care of themselves?

I turned them off on my truck. I personally don't like the fact that I can't turn my lights off and leave the engine running. When I want my lights on I'll turn them on.

It's not just so other people can see you, it's so you can see others. Shades of gray and brown are very popular paint colors on cars these days, and they are hard to see in many circumstances.
You and I can drive very carefully, but as has been noted on other threads here, common sense is not in abundance among drivers these days.
Anything that makes cars more visible is OK in my book. Just because something is mandated by the government doesn't mean that is necessarily a bad thing.

Pete (from Canada where DRLs are required by law)

As a motorcyclist I hate DRLs. Laws were passed years before DRLs came about to make motorcycles more visible by running their headlights all the time.
Not long after DRLs came into being the typical "I didn't see him" accident involving motorcycles started going back up.
Motorists no longer spotted the motorcycle they were about to pull in front of as easily and the more they became accustomed to DRLs the more it happened.
