Well, efficient enough to have removed the backhoe from all worksites the last 25 years. Backhoes are not efficient, takes way to much space, can't go 360 around, horrible in the terrain, can't climbe, sinks like a rock I wet conditions. And steelbelts is hard to beat when it comes to taking punishment. And is road use important you have wheel excavators.

I see skid steers, backhoes, and excavators on the same construction site all the time. Backhoes pretty much own the small construction sites. Cityç—´ will never give up their backhoes. Good luck driving the mini a couple miles.

Its the same around here.
Most Townships still use backhoes in my area also.
The backhoes are used to load the trucks (salt/anti skid, gravel, Etc.) and can travel relatively quick and easy from road, to road within the township for maintaining roads/ditch's without needing to be hauled to every job by truck.

Do that steer or skid? That picture appears to steer. That looks like a much more useful setup to me. It should be cheaper to buy and maintain, moves faster and doesn’t tear up the grass.

Wheeled excavators are uncommon here. If the travel speed is better I’d rather have that over tracks.

They are fairly common around here for cleaning out ditches, many of them were made by Drott back in the day.

We’ve got big tandem axel trucks with booms on them for cleaning ditches. The wheeled excavator seems more practical for that.

Our city street department has one (maybe 2) of those. It's easy to get it from site to site and functions very well.

The ones they have here, are pretty much dedicated to ditching. That way they can run down the road cleaning out ditches and they don't have to dedicate a truck and trailer to it to move it back and forth each day.
