Battery powered chainsaw

Grandpa… he would run the saw dry and take a break before refueling and then repeat depending on ambient temperature.

When I'm cutting off the pile, I have made a limit for myself.

ONE TANK FULL, then REST!.

But in this case "REST" means firing up the splitter, and rolling the rounds up near to hand. ;_)

Dang! I'm stupid!

So I had my first M18 battery fail, melted at the connector.
was 2 months left to the 3 year warranty.
Called Milwaukee warranty people, and replacement battery on the way!
No damage to the contacts on the tool? I deal with blown-up connectors as part of my job, ableit a different industry, and it's rare to see one side fail without also taking out its mate.

I got a Kobalt 40v one time from a local for 10 bucks and tore apart to figure out why it didnt work. 2019

She was like new but got hot and melted. No clue what the last owner did as there was no bar chain. But could only imagine.

Some folks just shouldn't own any chainsaws gas, batt, corded.

Good side

Bad side. Noticed mounted into plastic type stuff. When get hots it had melted.

Most of the little cooling fins were knocked off when it came loose. I pulled the rest to check it out closer.

Trying to learn to work on these seem to be mostly switches go out.

Used a dremel to remove the left behind plastic and then cleaned the contacts.

Milwaukee was my go to for decades but had a battery go bad on my first Milwaukee Cordless and was asked to return it for evaluation which I did.

Milwaukee said exposed to moisture???

I do construction but it was never subjected to water anymore than using it on a foggy SF morning.

I asked for the battery to be returned and was told it had been destroyed.

Have not bought Milwaukee since…

That is why I was so surprised they didn't even ask for photos.

Yesterday was the first time I tried the echo battery saw in the cold. About 12 degrees out and the battery had been in the garage at around 35 degree. The battery kept shutting off and wouldn't run the saw. Took it inside for a bit to warm up but same thing. Is it normal for battery saws (the batteries) to not work when they are cold? I could see down around zero being an issue but the temps I was working at don't seem to bad.

When my battery started that, it wasn't temp, it is was the battery that went bad after 12 months.

I sold the saw and now have two gassers

I don't keep any rechargeable batteries in the unheated metal shop in the winter let alone try to use one that is winter cold. I do not keep any battery in its charger - period - unless I will be using it following AND letting it cool a bit before use. I do not leave any rechargeable battery by itself, in the tool or in a charger out in the sun. And not in the unheated shop in the winter and in the charger.

There are various chemistries of 'lithium' batteries and some basic guidelines apply to all of them including your cell phone. The proper care and use of them has everything to do with how long they will last for you. Probably the most basic is don't store a rechargeable 'lithium' battery substantially depleted OR full when for periodic use.

They're kind of expensive aren't they?

This may or may not apply to your echo machine but we found our makita's have a amp limiter, or something the see's the motor is under to much load and won't let it run. My baby sized ones wouldn't run at all, but my larger 36volt will go if you keep spinning it a bit, then it will run at near zero temps after a few times of that. This is at near zero temps, with light oil and fresh, but cold batteries.

Keep your batters indoors at room temp. Did you read the owners manual?

Richard
How do you do that in the field? Not everyone is working in or near a heated garage. This photo was taken at near zero degrees, 60 miles from home and it still worked.

If your chain oiler doesn't leak/seep then the tank is empty or the bar/outlet is clogged. And for sure that's not a Ryobi specific issue.

True, to an extent. All my saws will leave a wet spot, but a few I've owned will damn near drain the whole reservoir, if left long enough.

In my current fleet, only the Stihl Kombi pole saw leaks a lot. Most others just leave a tiny damp spot on the OSB wood shelving where I store them.

That is funny. My experience has been the opposite. My Kombi saw and the regular Stihl pole saw neither one leaks a drop. All my Stihl chainsaws leak like a sieve.

The Milwaukee battery saw does not leak at all.
