Buying a bad battery was a first for me. I guess it happens all the time, but it never really occurred to me that it was happening when I was dealing with it.

Maybe dropped in transit?

The first battery was boxed really well. Totally enclosed in Styrofoam, and inside a heavy-duty cardboard box that didn't appear to be damaged. It took several days to get here, so anything is possible.

The second battery just had a label stuck to the top of it. No box, no protection at all. I ordered it Saturday evening; it was here Sunday afternoon.

I can't explain the difference in shipping. First battery was FedEx. Second box was some guy driving his own little SUV.

Looks like a good deal at Harbor Freight. Has auto mode to prevent overcharging.

The big roll about charger look impressive but when you get right down to it, most of them do not have much or any benefit over the small battery chargers.

Now that I've learned that the battery is bad, I've lost interest in buying a better battery charger. The old 10/50 Schumacher was able to get it started so I could get my last mowing in for the season. And there just wasn't any way to charge that battery. You could see the volts dropping when you put the meter on it after the charger was removed.

Agree. Something like a 2/10/50 seems sufficient for automotive use. Worst case leave it on the battery for a short while, set on 50, to put some energy into the deficient battery.

The starting assist shouldn't come entirely from the charger, rather the charger and battery should both contribute to the starting effort.

I picked up a big rolling one recently. Mostly because I wanted one with the manual knobs & no smart electronics. Makes doing things like using it to test starters or power electronics projects easier. Realized it only does 20@ on 6v though, which is annoying. Half the reason for it was the 6v antique bulldozer.

Would have gotten a non rolling unit with smart charging like the one pictured otherwise.
