It looks like my brand new battery is dead. I found a Load Tester in my Dad's stuff, and it shows the battery as being bad.

I've had the charger on it for 3 days. With the charger hooked up, it shows 14 volts. With the charger off, it shows 10 volts, but then it starts to drop and in a few minutes, all I got was 3 volts.

Now I'm looking at Walmarts website to see how I go about returning it.

Some medical batteries claim no recycled lead and cost significantly more...
I believe what you say about what they claim but I wonder if it really makes a difference. Are the people recycling lead from batteries really that much less careful to get only pure lead than the people who smelt lead from ore? Now I'm curious and am gonna try to find out.

Can the battery be returned to a Walmart?

Most warranties require dealer to bench test… some are even exchange first 90 days or even up to 1 year if tests bad.

I think Johnson makes Walmart Batteries?

Totally off subject but I was on the road today and came out to the car to find a near flat… planned on buying 2 tires next week.

I look up and see a tire shop across the street with service bay open New Year’s Day… what are the odds someone would be there?

The manager said I can sell you 2 tires today… so here I am… never bought Firestone but this is in stock…

3 o’clock New Years Day and getting tires.

I went to their website and pushed the return button. They asked why, I said it was defective. I have to bring it to a Walmart Store with my Email showing the barcode for the refund. I guess I'll go to NAPA to get another battery and spend the extra money.

I've got one from 5/13 that was 700 CCA and is holding @ 12.4 volts and 500 CCA. You can get a bad battery from anywhere. I've got 5 Walmart batteries in use right now. 2 H7's, 2 51R's and a 35. Just exchange it.

I took the battery to Walmart on Friday, and they said the only option available to them for my return was to a credit on their website. I wasn't happy, but didn't see any other options. I went home and logged into their website, which showed the return. It also gave me the option to move the money from being a credit with Walmart to my Bank Account.

I decided to give Walmart another chance, and I ordered the same battery, for the same price. This time, overnight delivery was an option. The battery was here Saturday afternoon.

Voltage was 12.4

Today, Sunday, the voltage was 12.6

I installed it and my tractor fired right up. Zero problems. Easy Pleasy.

I'll update if there are any issues.

Thank you for everyone's help and advice!!!
Eddie

Buying a bad battery was a first for me. I guess it happens all the time, but it never really occurred to me that it was happening when I was dealing with it.

Maybe dropped in transit?

The first battery was boxed really well. Totally enclosed in Styrofoam, and inside a heavy-duty cardboard box that didn't appear to be damaged. It took several days to get here, so anything is possible.

The second battery just had a label stuck to the top of it. No box, no protection at all. I ordered it Saturday evening; it was here Sunday afternoon.

I can't explain the difference in shipping. First battery was FedEx. Second box was some guy driving his own little SUV.

Looks like a good deal at Harbor Freight. Has auto mode to prevent overcharging.

The big roll about charger look impressive but when you get right down to it, most of them do not have much or any benefit over the small battery chargers.
same capacity it a small simple carry around size,

Now that I've learned that the battery is bad, I've lost interest in buying a better battery charger. The old 10/50 Schumacher was able to get it started so I could get my last mowing in for the season. And there just wasn't any way to charge that battery. You could see the volts dropping when you put the meter on it after the charger was removed.

Agree. Something like a 2/10/50 seems sufficient for automotive use. Worst case leave it on the battery for a short while, set on 50, to put some energy into the deficient battery.

The starting assist shouldn't come entirely from the charger, rather the charger and battery should both contribute to the starting effort.

I picked up a big rolling one recently. Mostly because I wanted one with the manual knobs & no smart electronics. Makes doing things like using it to test starters or power electronics projects easier. Realized it only does 20@ on 6v though, which is annoying. Half the reason for it was the 6v antique bulldozer.

Would have gotten a non rolling unit with smart charging like the one pictured otherwise.
