Totally respect that mindset.
Problem is, only a few of us have your chainsaw repairing/modifying capability.
Only a few techs out there I have talked to and even online talked to I trust.

I was at a echo dolmar dealer once and the tech was only one there.
I ask for the updated af cover for my 7900. He point at a echo and said this one. I walked out smh.

I had a stihl tech try and tell me the 261 piston was chromed. I laughed at him. SMH.

I could go on. Dont trust shops unless you know their folks actually know what their doing.

When I buy new saws I dont buy them for no stinking warranty anyways.

I tear into brand new saws no matter the brand to set up and tune the way I want.

No matter the brands either. Husky Echo Stihl and even Makita Dolmar in the day.

I dont even trust the shops to have the right tune and most dont that I start with fresh tune before I will use.
Yup, warranty means nothing to me and every saw I buy gets modified immediately.

Speaking of mods:

I like my saws factory because they get the job done, BUT I can never leave well enough alone 😁

If I modify my 261C or 500i, can the mods be reversed cheaply if I don’t like them?
I don’t really want to make my saws louder, and most mods are opening the bark box.

????

500i and 261 just do muffler mods IMO. The 500i just a cover like a straight shot. But you will need your hearing protection.

They are fing loud but the gains are there even over a muffler mod. By just putting the cover on and it adjust to it.

261 you could just gill it, hole with deflector, or tube pipe in oem muffler.

If you have the newest with M3 you could even run a Egan pipe. M1 M2 wont flow enough to keep up with pipe.

I guess I’d have to run one to see/hear increase in noise.

The SS is freaking loud. But the gains are there.

I was standing timing guys at Sawfest and all of them running them on their stihl's 400 462 500 etc etc.

They will wake the dead.

I bought a Stihl MS029 from a Stihl dealer back in 1998 or so, never went back to them.. Wasn't because they suck, they happen to be phenomenal, it was because I didn't need to. One, the saw just plain runs, the other is I did all the maintenance and repairs to it myself as a lot of others do. Fun story, when the muffler split open and melted the top of the oil tank mid-cut through a giant red oak, I bought a MS290 case with a blown motor and swapped my engine into that case. Good as new, with the upgrade to flip caps!
