18’ doors are gonna “breathe” a bit bud. The “struts” come in different sizes….3” tall 4” tall etc. I wonder which ones they used? How well the tracks are attached to the jambs and the track gauge and rollers make the most difference with wind load.

    My Industrial Cabin Build

Isn’t their “play” a form of herding? Our Aussies do that to each other. Constantly going for the back legs. Chasing the cat to get him into the corner…..and get him in the house. They also do a lot of head butting. We don’t have any livestock. We just loved the breed

    Building my barn!

Beats a ladder sir!! I like the metal style “framework” of this barn. Do the frames have pre drilled tabs to screw the girts/purlins too?
  29. D

    Detach 48x28 Garage - Footings

You’re probably fine with the tapcons you have. Most openings are framed with the header 2x6 first, then the spring pad sits on top of that. A couple “toe screws” would attach the bottom of the spring pad to the top of the header.

2-18x8 doors with roof pitch and Liftmaster 8500 series openers should take 2 guys one day to install
  32. D

    Detach 48x28 Garage - Footings

2x6 will be good for the jambs. Run them higher than the header “H” will be how they look. Your installer should have a drawing that shows elevations. I usually go about 6” higher. Countersink your fasteners so they don’t interfere with the door or tracks.
  33. D

    Detach 48x28 Garage - Footings

Roof pitch can be either opener style. I’ve personally done both. Side space/headroom/duty cycle will dictate which opener is best
  34. D

    Detach 48x28 Garage - Footings

2x12 is overkill honestly. 2x6 or 8 is perfect I’ve seen 2x4……some hold up some don’t. Is the foam stiff? The torque of the springs isn’t static. Door open=minimal load/door closed=max. If the foam is “stiff” it may be fine. I’m not well versed in mounting thru foam.
  35. D

    Detach 48x28 Garage - Footings

What about plowing out top/bottom….laying some 2x4s horizontally and fastening the 2x6 to those? Here’s a door mounted thru drywall with 1-5/8 lags…….not my install but I did get it back to “normal” looking alone in a couple hours. I put 5/16x3” lags in every mounting point for this door...
  36. D

    Detach 48x28 Garage - Footings

How stiff is the foam? I’m not a fan of any substrate that isn’t solid. I’ve seen too many screw pops from fastening thru drywall. I’ve also seen a door fall off the wall…… For a resi door….. 2x6x24” running vertical Space the two holes top and bottom approx 2” up/down and 1” in from each...

R value of garage doors only comes into play when the door is closed…….a man’s “shop” usually has the door open! The specs on ours calls out an r-value of about 10. Perimeter weatherseal ,windows, thermal break between inner and outer skins all contribute to insulation value. My opinion…..it...

    Power Rake Build - 54"

Not sure about the non keyed part. Ours are always keyed. Because the bushing is split and clamps to the shaft as you tighten it, the load is spread across the entire bushing/shaft area. Axial play is practically eliminated. Removal to adjust location or change gear size is relatively easy.

Throwing on some of the decking
  127. D

    Starting my bridge!!

Working on my additional supports for the deck 2x2 tubing welded to the angles on the ends and the tube in the center. 1” cold rolled torsion shaft welded on top of those. Cutting my span between 3x3 tubes to 13”.
  128. D

    Starting my bridge!!

I need 4 pieces angle approx 10’ long to go from post to post…..I only have 2….sigh.

    Starting my bridge!!

South of Effingham the topography/scenery really changes.

    Starting my bridge!!

I think I’m done for today. The wind was a bit brisk today……. Took about an hour break for lunch. I don’t have enough angle iron to make the angle braces. I might putter in the barn a bit working on my extra pieces to put in between the 3x3 tubes. Till tomorrow!

Where about in Central Illinois are you if I can ask? I’m down the street from Forbes State Park
  133. D

    Starting my bridge!!

Railings done Just adding the railings I can feel the bounce reduced already. Working on angles to tie the top and bottom together
  134. D

    Starting my bridge!!

That was another thread. I poked around in there a bit

    Starting my bridge!!

    Posts welded up!!
  136. D

    Starting my bridge!!

Sat and chatted a bit at breakfast with the neighbors. Slow start… Wells some clips of 3x3 angle on at the locations of the posts. Going to lay out my posts on the stringers now.
  137. D

    Starting my bridge!!

Been cutting and marking stuff up this morning. Top tubes are 18’ 2x6 Vertical tubes are 40” 2x5 Should put the top of my railing 37-39” from the deck Gonna go have biscuits and gravy and then start the welding!!
  138. D

    Starting my bridge!!

I presume when finish welded it would bow the truss up in the center.
  139. D

    Starting my bridge!!

    Everyone’s a critic….. :)

    Starting my bridge!!

This is pretty close. Some angles on the ends going down to the stringers

    HIGH RISK of Severe Weather

Just arrived in southern Illinois from northern Illinois. A couple mins of rain going down I-57 but that’s about it. Radar shows a line of storms heading this way from St. Louis. It’s partly cloudy and pretty windy right now

    Starting my bridge!!

Back at the farm by myself with my work truck, welder, a truck full of steel “stuff” and a decent weekend weather wise to work on the bridge Was chatting with a fellow ironworker today and my bridge came up. He and another guy built a bridge to support a 11,000 pound truck. They made...

    Spring snow storm

Southern Illinois was all rain….2”+ between Thursday-Friday Breezy and sunny yesterday Perfect morning today!
  144. D

    Starting my bridge!!

I’m planning to pour a concrete approach/abutment on one side for sure. The other side is more difficult to get concrete too. I could fab a chute to get concrete across the bridge. May end up being some old Schlub mixing it by hand……. Maybe some sort of grade beam/small slab on the far side...

    Starting my bridge!!

After school on the playground by the swings?;) Wondering if I should start a thread for my elevated tiny house when that gets built. (Of course I will) I’m reading and trying to digest all the stuff you guys post. My thoughts….. A “truss” design seems to make the foundation less...
  146. D

    Starting my bridge!!

Crappy mark up I know. I’d notch the ends of the angle and have then lay on the face of the post. That would give me plenty of surface to weld too
  147. D

    Starting my bridge!!

I kinda figured that’s the route to go. Any particular orientation for the “kickers”? I’ll most likely notched the ends of the kickers to lap onto the vertical tube. Lots of surface to weld set up like this.

    Starting my bridge!!

Aesthetics……I’ve told people before….. It’s a bridge in the woods NOT the Eiffel Tower. My current issue…….I’ve used all my long lengths of tube steel. I may have 2 17’ish long pieces. I can make a railing that would help with structural support but it would have to be pieced together. So...
  151. D

    Starting my bridge!!

I’m not sure if you guys are having all this math and engineering chat because you think my bridge is worthy of all this chat…….or I’m an idiot and it will buckle and actually catch fire!! All these other ideas give me a lot to think about. As far as clearance under the bridge…..during...

    Starting my bridge!!

Very nice sir!!! If you poked thru some earlier posts I have pics of my other bridges. 2 are wood and one is a c-channel frame approx 12’ long.
  153. D

    Starting my bridge!!

You sir……will be the death of me!!! :) Those tubes have other uses.
  154. D

Cost to connect to the grid?

The utility companysetting a new pole/wires/transformer/porch light and 200 amp service 150’ from existing line $2000

    Starting my bridge!!

I’ve got a pile of 2x5 tubes-probably 100 linear feet or more. The 2x6 I only had 3 this length. A door manufacturer uses them as a disposable “carriage” for their door assemblies. The concrete abutments will be set up as a slab with rebar pins going down and some post holes filled with...

    Starting my bridge!!

    20’ stick of 5/8 is $13 I believe 3/4 isn’t much more I’ve welded plenty of bar.
  159. D

    Starting my bridge!!

You guys are all great when it comes to the info!!! My 2x6 tubes (on the outboard ends) have a piece of 3x3x3/16 welded to them to carry the 3x3 cross tubes. I can call my steel supplier about rod stock instead or rebar on Monday. I can add additional plate reinforcements if need be...

    Starting my bridge!!

The one bridge with the pier is a different creek. Problems…..mostly leaves/branches/etc. A couple big logs. I’m trying to build with no pier. If this all fails….pier it is!

    Starting my bridge!!

What weekend do you guys wanna come down and play??:) No progress will be made this weekend. Family voted to stay at “home” due to weather (cold and crappy here and at the farm) and the 1000 things that can/should be done here. Loving all the input/drawings/etc from you all. I’ve come...

Is more always better? Would 3/4” rebar make my truss better? The conversations you guys have are fascinating to me. Of course in the construction world engineers/architects can sometimes be the death of us tradesman…….. I once napkin doodled a drawing for a contractor whose architect didn’t...

So far I’ve got $200ish invested Maybe another $500 in concrete Another $200 in steel….maybe A couple nice days working outside Bringing something “in”…..trailer/connex/etc is gonna require MONEY…….we are currently building another structure on-site. The bridge is something to keep me busy...

    Starting my bridge!!

    Interesting……thanks!
  168. D

    Starting my bridge!!

Thanks for the compliments! If can’t eliminate deflection……it’ll be foot traffic and ATVs only. I’m mostly doing this as a test and the experience for myself. I know safety comes first.
  169. D

    Starting my bridge!!

Of course there will be more photos!
  170. D

    Starting my bridge!!

Just keep pounding pieces of rebar till hard pan? Hard pan can’t be more than 4-5’ deep by me. We don’t even use septic systems with leech fields……ground doesn’t perc. 8-10 should be good? Skip the post hole digging to make concrete “anchors”? Different ideas are always welcome! Won’t be...

  172. D

    Starting my bridge!!

11’ x3’x18” deep slab Post hole digger down approx 3’ in 2 or 3 spots as “anchors” Concrete will encase approx 4” of the 6” tall tubes. Rebar welded to tubes at various points and welded to some bar in the slab
  173. D

    Starting my bridge!!

Gonna weld a 4x4x1/4” chunk of tube to a 2x6 tube. 4000 with mower and loader 1500 pounds…….most likely not

There will be concrete abutments guys.
  175. D

    Starting my bridge!!

2x6 tubes are 1/8” wall. Outside tubes have a piece of 3x3x3/16 -20’ welded to them for the 3x3 cross tubes to sit on There’s another 2x6 tube in the center under the 3x3 tubes Tractor weighs approx 4000 pounds I’m going to build this under each of the stringers out of 5/8 rebar. An...

    Starting my bridge!!

Thanks for all the well wishes everyone. No progress since a couple weekends ago. The bridge isn’t at our full time residence. We are going this weekend. I’ll (hopefully) be making some mock-ups for the bridge decking and driving one wheel of the tractor and pick up on them to see how the...
  177. D

    Starting my bridge!!

Re:cables Flat stock “sandwiching” the tube 1/2 or 5/8” bolts with spacers top and bottom Bottom bolt would have cable looped thru……no welding on ends. Center spacer is cut from a 4x4x1/4” tube approx 3” long….allowing a good weld from above on both sides. Flat stock I can get. I could...
  178. D

    Starting my bridge!!

This is my last resort. I have another bridge with poles/cross bracing/etc in the center. I’m trying to see if it’s possible not to use them.

    Starting my bridge!!

A cable under tension bowed down (4 or 6”) in the center should?
  180. D

    Starting my bridge!!

This is why we love this place!! I have multiple 50’ lengths of 3/8 crane cable (not aircraft cable). 5k capacity turnbuckles aren’t hard to get…..that’s where my cable idea came from. The rebar/flat stock idea work for me as well……overhead welding isn’t my strong suit so that’s why I was...

  182. D

    Starting my bridge!!

That’s concrete humor? I actually have 40’ (4-10’ pieces) of U shaped 22 or 24 gauge sheet metal shrouds for some coiling doors.
  183. D

    Starting my bridge!!

That pesky “hiring” word……. My neighbor has a couple excavators but I hate imposing. The chute idea isn’t bad……. I do have a teenage boy with friends and some wheel barrows.
  184. D

    Starting my bridge!!

Nothing new…… Except the churning in my brain!! Most likely will put a concrete abutment on both sides. Rough math says approx 1-1.5yd should give me what I want. Getting it to the other side is my big challenge. Trying to figure where else to put more concrete. Minimum with no cartage is 3yds...

    Starting my bridge!!

Hence the cable/turnbuckle idea I don’t NEED to drive a vehicle across. Mostly a test of my skill to see if I can build so a vehicle can drive across
  187. D

    Starting my bridge!!

Scootr I was gonna build that under the span with cable/turnbuckles/piece of steel center span Tighten turnbuckle-arch bridge
  188. D

    Starting my bridge!!

I plan on a railing/guardrail of some kind.
  189. D

    Starting my bridge!!

Results…… Started with a bit of a crown….approx 1/8” I’d say there’s an 1/8” between the string and the 2x4. 1/4” sag. I have some 3/8 crane cable….I may make a “u” under each stringer and use a turnbuckle to “arch” the bridge
  190. D

    Starting my bridge!!

Welding is done!!! Gonna set a string line on one side. Throw some boards across and park both ATVs right in the middle and measure deflection……stay tuned
  191. D

    Starting my bridge!!

No sir 6x6 treated rated for ground contact
  192. D

    Starting my bridge!!

Thank you sir!! Cut and notched 4 of the 6 cross tubes last night. Cross tubes are on 2.5’ centers Laid those 4 out this morning…..looking like a bridge!! Gonna cut and notch the last 2 now. Waiting till after 8 to fire up the welder
  193. D

    Starting my bridge!!

That’s about it for today! Level-ish Square-within 3/4”-hard to square big things solo I’ve got 6 more cross pieces to cut/notch/weld Then the deck……might do steel tubes flat where the tractor/truck drive and than wood for the rest
  194. D

    Starting my bridge!!

    Taking a break to eat
  195. D

    Starting my bridge!!

Stringers complete!!! 2x4 is just to show how the cross tubes will go. They will be 3x3x3/16..8’ long

Progress so far. Taking a break for some ice water and swapping of laundry. This is the center stringer. Gonna weld up the outside stringers after my break Gonna be tricky getting the other 6x6 across the creek We have a crossing I can drive my tractor across….1.5” of rain last night made...
  199. D

    Starting my bridge!!

I agree. Budget doesn’t allow for it currently…..so far I’ve got $180 in the 6x6. When they pour the slab for the new barn I may order an extra yard or 2 and fill around the beams
