Tractor
Kubota L4701
Hello all! Back in 2019, I came here for help on choosing a tractor for my newly acquired land. Everyone was very helpful, and we landed on a 2020 Kubota L4701HST with a LA765 FEL. Implements are a box blade, 6' Land Pride Rotary Cutter, grapple and a set of 2k pallet forks. I recently added a Woodland Mills WC68 chipper. As a first time tractor owner, it was so much fun and I've gotten a lot of great use out of it. We're on 15 acres, about 50/50 woods and pasture. I have a wild life exemption on the land, so it's mainly used to mow when it's not baled by a neighbor, tackle downed trees, spread gravel on our driveway, and various other tasks.

We just purchased 11 more acres, this is more like 70/30 woods to fields. More trees to take care of and some trails to maintain.

I'm leaning towards a Grand L6060. It looks to be around $61k new from a local dealer. I did find a 2023 50th Anniversary Edition with 260 hrs for $46.5k.

I'd like to stay in the Kubota family since the local dealers are great, and it's now what I'm familiar with.

I didn't think I would need the size and weight of the MX series. Open to any and all suggestions. Thank you!

I have both a cabbed L6060 and an MX5800 open station. I'm on 25 acres with 10 of it wooded. Both tractors are great but serve different purposes. I mow and plow with the L6060 to take advantage of the heat and AC in the cab. The MX will go into the woods where the L6060 can't without cab damage. I have a BH92 hoe which will attach to both tractors but I find the MX to be much better working dirt. This is surprising since the L6060 with hoe subframe actually weighs a bit more than the MX. The larger front tires on the MX give better traction though, which is probably the reason. Another thing I like about the MX is, it will accept the LA1065 loader which will lift a bit more than the LA1055 on the L6060.

There really isn't much difference in size between the L6060 and MX5800 and you really can't go wrong with either, but the extra "bells & whistles of the Grand L series make it more comfortable doing certain work operations. Both are available with cabs but for doing woods work, I'd stick with an open station.

Welcome to the forum and good luck with your choice!

Is there a reason you won’t use the tractor you’ve got on the new property?

Thank you! Good points, yeah I've already been thinking that I'll need to change how I handle going into the woods with the cab. Right now I can just duck the cedar limbs.

I could, but what is the fun in that when you can spend more money? :)

In all seriousness , this is really about upgrading to a cab. Right now when I mow, it's late July. Since I have a wildlife exemption, I have to wait until after July 15th to mow. So an entire weekend in 100+ heat, eating dust, is not much fun. I know that going from 49 to 60HP isn't a giant leap, and weight isn't going up much, it's really more for creature comfort.

Keep your existing tractor for working in the woods since cabs and woods don’t mix to well.

FWIW I'm on 28 acres, 20 of it wooded and I'm very happy with my 4701.

Is a MX actually larger than a GL6060? That would surprise me to be honest.

What do you think your current tractor wont be able to do?

Well there isn't much that the L6060 can do that my 4701 can't as I mentioned, but it has a cab and that's the biggest draw for me right now. Plus another dozen or so HP would help if I wanted to get a larger rotary cutter.

MX is larger but not by much, it is heavier.

That’s an exciting upgrade—you’ve clearly been putting your L4701HST to good use, and with the added acreage and heavier tree/land work, it makes sense to look at something with more capability. The Grand L6060 is a nice step up in comfort and power, and it sounds like you’ll benefit from the extra weight and features for managing trails and woods. That 50th Anniversary Edition you found seems like a solid deal, especially with only 260 hours on it. Staying with Kubota is smart too, since dealer support and familiarity go a long way when it comes to maintenance and parts. Sounds like whichever way you go, you’ll have a machine that really fits the new demands of your property.

Well dealer I was negotiating with sold it out from under me...so maybe I need to think on it more.

Great deals do dis-appear quickly. Hard to blame the dealer for selling it to someone else. They have to keep stock moving to stay in business. Act quickly, go with your gut feeling next time you see something you like. Remember, everyone has an opinion, yours is the only one that counts.

Tough luck. It looked like a good deal. :(

I usually leave a deposit with the dealer for a possible high price future purchase.
Most are willing to hold the item for a period of time. The amount, timeframe and refundability are usually negotiable.

I went from a 37 hp open station tractor and a 6 foot cutter to a 70 hp cab tractor and a 12 foot batwing 3 years ago. I expected it to be nicer and able to get more done, but I'm still in shock and how much more I get done in so much less time.

The more HP allows me to mow faster. The cab allows me to mow when it's too hot to do anything else on the farm. Usually I start mowing around 3 or 4 pm, when temps are getting close to 100 outside and the humidity makes it hard to breath. After a few hours in the cab, I'm relaxed and feeling good.

Instead of mowing all of my land once a year, and the area around the pond more often, I'm able to do all my land three times a year. The weeds are decreasing significantly, and the grass is taking over without having to use chemicals.

My biggest challenge is with the trees hitting my mirrors. I swear that they move their branches when I get close to them to mess with me!!!!

Another thing that I wasn't expecting with the cab was how much I could get done in Winter. I take the batwing off once the temps cool and the grass stops growing. Then I put on my rear ballast and the front bucket. I move dirt to all my ditches, holes and trouble areas in the heated cab while listening to the radio. It might be just an hour, or I might spend several hours doing this. Even when it's wet outside, I can still get things done. Right now, I'm actually looking forward to doing this because I have a list of areas that I want to build up, smooth out and make nicer that I discovered while mowing this year. I'll wait until it gets cold and nasty out to do this because when summer ends, it's really super nice here, and that's when I'll get the most done on my projects around the house.

Don't try and negotiate on a good price, someone else will end up buying it. I thought it was a very good price compared to new price...

It's like seeing a good price on Crais's list and coming to TBN to ask if it's a good deal... too late, just sold!!! Got to know prices before shopping!

Yeah, I guess its just my inexperience with tractor buying. We just got through buying my wife a new SUV a few months ago, and that was much more methodical and slow. Negotiating with several dealers, etc. I just didn't anticipate how quickly tractors move. Also, being so new at it, I was a little nervous about buying it sight unseen (an hr drive way, couldn't get off work to go look at it. Was going to go today).

We were texting back and forth at like 4PM on pricing, and at 4:30 he said "Sold it." I can't take it personally, I know he's in business and a check/deposit in hand is the name of the game. Apparently they are the place around here that buys/sells used tractors all the time. I've since found out that all of the dealerships around here use them to buy their trades. So it's my fault for not being quicker on the trigger.

Thank you for the input! That is what I'm thinking.

In the beginning with my 4701, I was a hopeless romantic. Wind in my hair, smell of the breeze, tractor life is great. But after a few years of mowing in July and having to sit for 6 hours in the sun with a dust mask on and ear buds, I'm kinda over the romanticism now. Ready to be in the climate controlled environment.

Well, maybe losing out on that anniversary edition L6060 was the best thing because I'm now nearing the purchase of a 2021 Grand L6060 HSTC with barely over 100 hours for $40k. Comes with a 6' rotary cutter (I don't need but will use to resell my 4701) and a PTO auger drill.

It's 2 years older than the anniversary edition but from everything I've read, the hours are the most important? I haven't looked at it in person yet but photos online look great. Buying from an attorney who is taking this by receivership, I assume from either a contentious divorce or an estate. Doesn't have a 3rd function, so I know that will add some cost.

Being a '21 I'll be out of warranty sooner than the first one, but overall I think it seems like a great deal?

Aside from the paint & badge and the factory installed Land Pride quick hitch, the two machines are nearly identical.

Yes, IMO the hours are the most important.
