Thanks for the posts and idea's guys. We will be back down there to clear bush for her. She has 100's of jobs there to be done and we will help her with whatever we can. Her deceased husband was not at all mechanical. This is her on the left and we believe in her 70's.View attachment 817777
When looking for a Yanmar, a person on the YTOG asked, What are the better models to look for? From knowing these machines over many years, this is the reply given . . .

You are doing the smart way of finding a tractor, find the best model types for ease of service and plentiful parts.
The YMxx10 & YMxx20 models are the favorites as those have the PowerShift, better tach meter gauges and more controls.
Some even have the engine block ports ready for winter block heaters.
Additionally, these models have the multi-PTO ability and better brakes. Once you decided on a YMxx10 or YMxx20, the next item is to pick the 3 cylinder engine over the 2 cylinder. The 2 cylinder is loud. It's nicknamed the Yanmar hammer. The 2 cylinder hammer is more pronounced in the longer stroke sizes like the 2TR17 up to the 2TR27. The 3 cylinder runs quieter and smoother. These are the 3 cylinder popular engines in the lineup, 3T72SB, 3T72SA-B, 3T72SA, 3T80 with no "U" suffix, and any 3T84. The 3T75 and 3T82 engines are not popular enough for parts. Suffix "U" engines have no sleeves and are costly to rebuild if there is cylinder wall damage. The 2T90 and 3T90 engines are rare birds. Deere has one in the JD950, yet when the engine fails, people snag a 3T80 as it's a bolt up plug-n-play option. If you only find a 2 cylinder, the 2T84 shares parts with the 3T84 for the pistons, rings and more.

All true and the YM's with PowerShift are well worth the few thousand $ extra over the barebones earlier models.

That said, the YM240D in this thread is I think the best buy IF lowest cost is the most important criteria. It will do the work and it's indestructible. Also it's as simple as a claw hammer if you don't know what you're doing. Downside is: you need to make a full stop to choose a different gear. And its unpleasantly loud, wear hearing protection. I still think my YM240 was a good choice when I hadn't been on a tractor for 40+ years and at the time didn't want to spend more when I had no idea what I needed.

Cutting grass and noticed my steering wheel seemed loose and rather easier for me to turn. Thought of this thread!! Don't think When I got off it I didn't grab the front wheels and give them both a good shake sideways to see if the bearings was going out again. Still tight!!.
It was in the Steering gear box play, Exactly 1 full turn on the Adj. tightened it right back up and took the play out. Been Yrs. since I done it. Not long after buying it and checking the gear oil level in the Gearbox Housing 2009. California I'm real sure posted it on here how to check the oil and Adj. it.

Yes, REM as in Remington Oil. Works great! It's not as heavy as diesel and not as light as starting fluid.
So, what sort of fluid and use are we talking here? WD40-ish? Spray down the air intake with no filter on?

Definitely, live and learn. I had never heard of it.

Thanks!

All the best,

Peter

I'd be interested in hearing opinions whether the JD/Yanmar models are also ones to consider if one of those happened to come available. The JD 750 /850/950 in particular look very similar to my YM226d. I see some of those listed for sale locally, but they seem to stay for sale on the market longer than other brands. Are the parts harder or more expensive to come by than just buying a Yanmar branded tractor?

When the Refurb. YM2500 was purchased it was told to us by the Fredricks supplied dealer that it was basically a Yanmar/JD.. Same dealer as my Ym2000 I purchased it from. Why I had no problem with Retired Catholic priests purchasing it for their property. Which I basicaly knew what happened with Yanmar.
JD. had them make changes to the models for the US. needs. PTO gearing was the most comon. Throttle linkage etc.. When you see those models they are what they are. Yanmars painted Grn. but with a big markup on the Grn. = $
With the few changes. Parts Availability and Yanmar tractors back then was hard to come by. Eventually IMHO. why Yanmar even came back to the US.. The models sold and worked very well.

We've read here and in the Deere sub-forum that Deere ended support for those, and the only one that still has decent support is the 850 because it is a manual transmission twin to YM2500. The others had unique Deere-designed features that are now unobtainable.

Hoyetractor of Texas lists replica parts for the Deeres that are common to Yanmar, but beyond that they may be unsupportable. I would research support thoroughly, before buying one!

A neighbor near here has a Deere 650 that has been in two pieces for several years now. When I put my first YM186D (no loader) on Craigslist he came by with a friend who is a car nut, restores old Camaros etc. They liked the Yanmar but said they wanted an American tractor. A while later that 650 appeared in his driveway. But it has never run. I think they assumed it would be simple to overhaul. Apparently not.

Putting oil in the Cylinders is a common practice. Much easier on a Gas motor. You can remove the spark plugs and squirt oil in the cylinder. Junk Yard dogs have done this for decades. Esp. on low compression. The oil helps seal the weak and worn out Rings and help build compression. I use my decompression for the exact opposite reason. When holding the valves open the Oil,Moisture and raw fuel will get blow out of the open Valves. When you do it the oil has to go somewere which is the Muffler and Exhaust. The motors Cyl. is already in bad shape so the Exhaust is full of carbon unburnt fuel etc. and your makng it worse. I'm all Org. and have pulled and cleaned my Muffler a couple times. Soaked it in gas and Blew it out with compressed air. For decades When I check the fluid levels before use I would clean the exhaust cap. Haven't had to pull the Muffler or Exhuast in Yrs.. Not much oil use either so that's not a problem on mine. Carbon on the exhuast cap with traces of oil is about it. When I first bought it, Org. ASIS I would get Oil and Carbon bombs which would cover the hood and me!! You had to wear a hat. Reason why I pulled and cleraned the exhaust in he first place. Learned also not to try and wipe them off they smear Big Time!! So when you see Mufflers removed and pointed forward that's usually the reason why. Diesel smoke also for some people with breathing problems. But I'm always moving so that's not a problem. I still to the day have my Exhuast cap turned around pointing forward from the Carbon Bomb problem. I can honestly say They do not show up on me or the Tractor after use.

I'm now at the owners house brushing things back. She did fill me in with more details on her classic tractor. It seems likely the fellow who said wants it will be back for it. He did try to start it but failed. In the future I'll try get you guys more photos.

Just how far would you travel to snag a working Yanmar tractor? Or similar?

Back brushing out trails at this place. I went around and around the 240D today and told the owner to get a-hold of the fellow who said wants it, so its ready to go. There was so much grass here, you couldn't see your feet. I stepped off the mower and decided its just 4ft wide. The back blade is in the grass between the tractor and mower..
