A beach on a lake and a beach on the ocean are two different things.
Having spent more time sailing from both than most people you know, lakes are gross. Give me salt water and sand, over fresh water and mud or slimy rocks, ten times out of ten.

Twice this week and once last week I've driven 40 minutes to pick up my 16-year old granddaughter and then driven 30 minutes to take her to golf lessons. (Local celebrity golfer holding classes). Then I wait around for a couple hours to take her home. Lunch included wherever she wants to eat. During our talks in the drive it has been established that: 1. she hasn't been to a beach in a couple years, 2. she sure would like to go to a beach, 3. younger sister (recently 10th birthday) has only been to a beach once since she was a baby, 4. I would be a fantastic granddaddy if I somehow planned, organized, and paid for a beach vacation for her, her sister, and the entire family including her parents, aunt, uncle, and three cousins. So counting myself and my wife there would be eleven of us.

Anybody else have granddaughters? Do they manipulate you so easily? I mean, dang it, I know I should be harder to control. But since she was born with these big brown eyes and the longest eye lashes she has managed to do this. And she has taught her younger sister and cousin the drill. Want something from granddaddy, just stare at him, blink your eyes, smile, and say please.

Well the stock market is doing well, and I might as well spend it as to hoard it. Rather see them happy now as getting the cash when I die. I'm thinking these thoughts as I search VRBO for a house big enough for eleven on a beach within a one day drive from Western Kentucky.

Are there no lakes with a nice beach nearby? Lake beaches are cleaner and safer. I spent most of my life at the coast before moving to the interior to a resort community.and found the experience similar.

I wrote the above before reading other's posts. I'm amazed at how different people have a different opinion on this. I live in the Shuswap area near the Okanagon in south central B.C. and find the xperience is just as nice as Hawaii except that was a break from Winter.

I have also sailed Hobie Cats from both salt water and fresh water. The lakes were always clean, so no problem there. But the oceans were also clean but had salt. Everything had to be washed down after sailing to get the residue off. Also I did't like the feel of the sheets when they were covered in salt water. Definatey hated wiping the salt spray off my face from the waves. But to each their own. Jon

At 71 I have no Grandkids. My wife has passed away 24 years ago. Wish I had Grandkids to take to the beach or anywhere else.

Sorry. Have you thought of helping out with a local youth group?

All the best,

Last week, 13 out of 39 Iowa state beaches are closed because of E-coli and various kinds of bacteria.

Some lakes are just gross during the dog days of summer.

Quite a few closed here in Nevada also. Algae blooms that happen every summer, some of which are rather toxic.

Better hope those grandkids don't stumble on this forum. "Grandpa, could we go SCUBA diving with you?" Could be a whole new set of lessons and trips.

I find it humorous, GPs that didn't have time for their own kids, can't do enough for their grand evil spawn.
Spoiling them and turning them into entitled little monsters.
Screwed up the kids and now screwing up the next generation.

My youngest grandson (4yo) if leaving with granny, will broadcast in a very loud voice "We're going to spend your money!!!!!!"

No manipulation involved. He's very direct and honest about it
What honest and direct?
He's just parroting his granny.
And you know what she thinks of you. ATM!(y)

Yeah, granny did teach him that. But it was a joint account that she contributed too equally.

You should see his face when we were taking him out somewhere and granny had just gotten paid.

I would correct him and tell him we were actually spending grannies money tonight

It starts with the parents. It's not the grandparents that they are learning from everyday. If you feel you can't spoil your grandkids I think that's kind of sad. One of the things I'm looking forward to as we are getting close to being empty nesters.

Wow. I’m glad I don’t have to live in your brain, Massey! :ROFLMAO:

Grandparents spoiling grandkids is a rite of passage of every generation, probably going back millennia. Parents are too busy to be spoiling the kids, that’s the grandparents’ whole job, in a sense. The parents just need to keep the kids disciplined and on the right track, which is enough at an age when they’re in a career, paying for a house, and everything else that comes with the territory.

I’m with the give them whatever you can afford to within reason of course.
My granddaughter is three and I have already gotten her a power wheels jeep and an arctic cat kitty cat snowmobile.
I wasn’t able to afford some of the things I wanted to get for my daughter when she was a child but I can now and my daughter knows this and isn’t always happy that I get things for my granddaughter that she wanted as a child and didn’t get.
She even stated once that I have to stop spoiling her with treats because I’m going to give her Diabetes!!!

I picked up a dune buggy go-cart, repowered it, put in 5 point harnesses, and gave it to my two older grandsons, much to my daughter in laws dismay

I think that thing caused several Grey hairs for her.

Of course I accidently over powered it slightly so it would do about 45mph, and loved to do donuts and drift on dirt and grass

Not so! We made time for our kids whenever we could. Took at least a week's vacation every year if possible. We still try to take vacations with each of the two daughters families every year. My parents and my in-laws both helped us financially when we were starting out and left us resources when they passed. I intend to do the same. My wife and I not only provide fun things to do such as vacations, we also make a point to teach them as much as possible. Even the grandson loves to help Granna in the kitchen and all three of the girls old enough have spent quite a bit of time there with her. And the girls have all helped Granddaddy put things together or repair things using tools. We do what we can to teach and train. Not just provide financial help.

You're just glad? I'm F'n giddy you're not here to drag me down.
I know too many GPs that spoiled their GKs to the point of useless.
Guy I used to know (He's been dead 20 years) his father started a business from a barn most of us would have torn down.
Kids all had to work every day after school and all summer.
They turned into successes themselves.
The GKs were spoiled from day one.
I only know of one girl that went on to college.
The others felt they were beyond work and deserved everything they were given.
Bunch of petty thieves, drug addicts and alcoholics.
Original kids, 9/9 workers.
GKs, that I know of, 1/12 success. Just waiting to get their inheritances.

Thats a parents issue versus grandparents issue.

My oldest grandson got spoiled when he was with us. But also held accountable for actions.

Oldest grandson just signed on with a local baptist college.
