Twice this week and once last week I've driven 40 minutes to pick up my 16-year old granddaughter and then driven 30 minutes to take her to golf lessons. (Local celebrity golfer holding classes). Then I wait around for a couple hours to take her home. Lunch included wherever she wants to eat. During our talks in the drive it has been established that: 1. she hasn't been to a beach in a couple years, 2. she sure would like to go to a beach, 3. younger sister (recently 10th birthday) has only been to a beach once since she was a baby, 4. I would be a fantastic granddaddy if I somehow planned, organized, and paid for a beach vacation for her, her sister, and the entire family including her parents, aunt, uncle, and three cousins. So counting myself and my wife there would be eleven of us.

Anybody else have granddaughters? Do they manipulate you so easily? I mean, dang it, I know I should be harder to control. But since she was born with these big brown eyes and the longest eye lashes she has managed to do this. And she has taught her younger sister and cousin the drill. Want something from granddaddy, just stare at him, blink your eyes, smile, and say please.

Well the stock market is doing well, and I might as well spend it as to hoard it. Rather see them happy now as getting the cash when I die. I'm thinking these thoughts as I search VRBO for a house big enough for eleven on a beach within a one day drive from Western Kentucky.

One hour drive from Western Kentucky, to any beach would be a 15 minute drive to the airport and a 45 minute flight, which still won't get you there!
If you want to really impress them try Destin Beach on the panhandle in Florida. You will be able to unload a significant amount of their inheritance doing so.

I'm with Eddie. We don't have grandkids, but I wouldn't be roped into paying for my adult kids or their SOs. My SIL is a PITA, so I'd rather stay home than vacation with him.

On the outside chance I paid for them, it would be in exchange for something I wanted. (Labor, visits, etc)

I'm also one that easily burns. Beaches are nice, but it would have to be off-season and a very cloudy day.

On the positive side, big family get togethers are nice. Maybe have each family contribute something (food, jet skis, whatever makes sense). We did a house for 25 in Breckenridge for my folks' 60th. Only 1 of their grands couldn't make it.

Our family rented a house at Avon NC for a week soon. After the heat has shifted some (I hope). We split the costs of the $3k house among us. Wasn't a bad hit on anyone then. We'll split the food costs etc when we get down there I'm guessing. I'm taking the boat for some inshore fishing so hopefully fresh fish will be on the menu at least once or twice. I think it will be 11 of us.

We're spoiled being 30 minutes from Lake Michigan. So many beaches!

We've also rented houses along the outer banks. And been up and down the east coast several times.

There are quite a few lakes in Kentucky. I'm sure there are some beaches you can find.

My youngest grandson (4yo) if leaving with granny, will broadcast in a very loud voice "We're going to spend your money!!!!!!"

No manipulation involved. He's very direct and honest about it

You don’t have lakes and beaches in Kentucky?
Not really! Only if you dam a river. Of which there are several big reservoirs. But - no waves, no endless view, no sprawling sand dunes, no different birds and aquatic life.

Theres just something special about ocean beaches (and the leeward side of the great lakes!).

A beach on a lake and a beach on the ocean are two different things. My daughter LOVED walking the Oregon beaches at low tide, watching the sea lions and picking up star fish, etc. Tide pools are just full of little sea creatures and kids love that.

Once when I was exploring Oregon, I came up from Idaho towards Eugene. Got to the pacific and stopped to admire the view. Lots and lots of pebble like rocks on the beach. It was facinating to hear what sounded like something running through them each time the waves came in. Tick a tick a tick a tick... Kept me entertained for a while...

You don’t have lakes and beaches in Kentucky?
We have that in “coastal Pennsylvania”.

Just look at all that coastline!

You're a lucky man. You can't take your money with you, but you might be lucky enough to keep the memories.

If you have the means and the time, then grab it while you can. They're only this age once, and grandparents become so much less "cool" around age 14. Spend all the time with them you can, while they still want to.

Actually that should have been a one day drive. I went and changed it on the original post. The problem with flying that many down there is it would take three rental cars to satisfy everyone.

I got my daughters certified to SCUBA when they were 17 and 13. We dove in the Keys, up and down the east coast, in Mexico, and the Caymans. When the oldest was a senior in high school a friend invited her to go out on Kentucky Lake in their family's boat and I realized neither child had been on the huge lake twenty miles from our home. Then for some reason while they thought nothing of going out ten miles from land and diving 60-80 feet under water in the ocean they were always scared of the fresh water lake.

When our 4 children were relatively young we took a LONG beach vacation. Took two vehicles, Ford E350 maxivan and dodge mini-van. Started at just about Va./NC border for a short shakedown, then resumed at Wallops island. Drove up the coast, mostly staying at hotels, occasionally campgrounds. Destination was ideally France (St Pierre and Miquelon islands south of Newfoundland).
Trip went well, visited a lot of historic sites, lot's of ocean time. Went on two whale trips. Got to the Bay of Fundy, raced the tide safely. But after about a week and a half on the road the troops got restless and vetoed going to Newfoundland and France :(. Long trip back, again mostly along the coast.
Children still speak fondly of it.

We did a family vacation a few years ago to Florida.

Son, daughter, their spouses and the grandkids. So 9 of us.

We paid for the condo rental, they just had to get themselves there.

We had a great time. Little man was 8 months old.

During that trip he becomes a Papa's boy Before that trip, he wouldn't have anything to do with me
