Some Avant propaganda.... I wish they would have done it with real machines, but it's interesting.

Here's a link to a comparison of 4 articulated loaders working on a diary farm.

VIDEO: On-test: Four latest mini loaders put through their paces - INSIGHTS - Farmers Guardian

Here's a quote from the article. Go to the link to read the whole thing.

"On paper, JCB’s 403 had the lowest power, lift capacity, hydraulic flow and the largest turning circle of any machine we had on test, yet it out-performed all the other machines when run against them." Plus it had the lowest cost.

So it kind of illustrates what many of us have been trying to get people to think about:

Just because the listed specs may tell you one thing, the only way to really find out is to actually run them through their paces.

If you only intend on loading trucks the loader is definitely the better tool. My buddies gehl weigh 10k to achieve the near same posted lift capacity as my 11.8 k skid steer. That’s a far cry from the ratio claimed in the video. I’m not sure how accurate the fuel usage is. My skid steer is twice the hp as my buddies loader, but mine has a lot more felt power in the drivetrain. They’re right about the grass, and that’s my biggest complaint with the skid steer. His main use for the gehl loader is loading 1 ton boxes of vegetables on a truck from the field so that’s the best tool I can think of for the job.

If price was not an issue one of those Avant units would be exactly what I need. They appear to cost a lot more than my tractor did. Looks like the 225 is not too far off from a SCUT in terms of weight and power, but costs $20,000. A tractor like mine with loader is less than $13,000.

But the difference in lift capacity is huge!

What do you mean? MT125 lift capacity of 457kg to 1830mm. Avant 225 lifts 350kg to 1400mm. The MT125 weighs 655kg (without loader) and the Avant 225 weighs 700kg.

My mistake. Different machine

Okay, here's my revised list:

I have a small frame CUT, a large frame CUT and a Simplicity Conquest mower (may upgrade to a SCUT if I stumble across a bargain). In my dreams, I would also have:

  • A Skidsteer
  • A Telehandler (for the cool factor alone)
  • A John Deere 3010 Diesel
  • A Powertrac (for the cute factor alone)
  • A Toolcat so I can haul things and ride around
  • A Mini Excavator so I can mini excavate

An excavator is rather good for excavating and can doze better than any cut.

The quoted post doesn’t have a excavator in it. I’d sure hope a excavator is good at excavating. Otherwise it’s pretty much useless. My experience with excavator blades is they make a good stabilizer. Maybe if it had a 4 way blade vs a 2 way it would be better. Every minute I’ve spent grading with an excavator blade was a minute I wished I was on my skid steer. The blade was fairly limited in ability and the excavator is a clumsy platform for continuous movement.
