Well, I was able to put about 4.5 hours on the new flail. Did my before PMCS, everything was tight and oil level good. Started off slow and easy with nothing to report. Did some cutting in 6-10" grass with a few small patches of big stem grass. Took a break an hour 20 into it and cleaned of the deck and did some checks. The top of the gear box was saturated, checked the tightness of the vent bolt which was tight. Oil level was at the bottom of the view port, so looks like it lost some due to venting. Checked all the hardware and found the bolt that holds the chain guard rod just a bit loose. Tightened it up and and noticed the quick connects were wet. Messed around with them for a bit and can't tell where it's leaking from. Gonna pick up a new set of male 1/2" npt fittings and replace to see if that's the cause. Finished up the rest of the pasture with no problems at all. I will note that if someone needs to use the hydraulic shift quite a bit that if the clippings pile up on the deck it will cause them to be compressed against the frame while shifting I side to side.

Sidecar, yea the 88 comes with the shred bars which was a feature that wasn't necessary. I was needing a wide cut flail that fit my tractor. This flail is at the max pto hp required, but for I do it handled it with ease.

leonz, thanks the welcoming gesture. yeah I'm not a fan the spring pins on attachments that get slung around brush and anything that can snag them off. Fortunately what I was cutting I know there wasn't a chance to lose one. Now that I have my pasture knocked down, those shred bars will get removed.

I ran mine a bit more today mostly light brush & scrub 12i high +/-. I also had a bit of oil out the vent plug. I'm going to add a short nipple extension to help minimize this. I've used this as a solution on other equipment.

I've had no hydraulic leaks, or any loose bolts with about on 2 hours on the mower. I tried adusting the angle of the mower from the 15deg recommendation from the manual. it looks like 5-7deg is working best for me.

bgruss,

I'm looking at the same Woodmaxx flail you purchased and have a similar size tractor. Wondering if you've had it on any steep ground and how the tractor handled it. I'm guessing their tractor size recommendations might have more to do with the weight of the flail (1300 lb +) than the power needed to run it but also curious if you tried it on any taller stuff or light brush? Anything else you can share with your experience thus far, good or bad? Many thanks!

Sidecarist,

Also looking at the same flail from Woodmaxx. Happy with how your tractor handles it? Do you think your tractor could run the bigger Woodmaxx flails now that you've run this one awhile? Any seat time for tall/thick stuff or on steep ground? Thanks!

I just ordered a FM-78H Woodmaxx Flail, could you guys give me an update on how they are holding up? They are on backorder until late April, so I had to do a $ 100.00 deposit. I plan on using it for acreage mowing here in Arizona, I hate my brushhog and am hoping I will like a flail much better.

I haven't had the chance to run it much. We had a VERY dry summer and not much to mow as a result. It seems well built with the possible exception of the roller scraper which seems vulnerable. Time will tell as we are headed into growing season here and I'll have a couple of fields to mow soon.

As use it more I'll report back.

OK, Woodmaxx flail owners I'm sure that since we're starting to hit summer that you've been able to get some time with these by now. What's the latest report?

I gave up waiting for mine that I had on order (kept being on backorder) as I had jobs stacking up, so I bit the bullet and spent a little over 5K for a Land Pride FM2172 Flail Mower, it's a nice Italian Made Flail, already did 30 acres of nasty Northern Arizona Prairie weeds/rocks, took it like a champ.
