A double pole double throw is basically a transfer switch ... lol

A 3 way can be called a double pole. That would be a double pole single throw switch. It has 2 poles that make contact and send electricity thru the circuit. Up is one pole and down is one pole. A regular, single pole, light switch has one pole and an open setting which doesn't send electricity to anything. It is a single pole single throw. Most people call them 3 way switches. 3-phase is 3 hot wires, not a type of switch. You can have a 3-phase single pole switch, like to turn on an air compressor, usually a 3 pole contactor operated by a wall switch. I would find a diagram online of the switch and follow that, be sure to color your wires correctly. Mainly the common and ground.

the one I removed powered the hvac, I removed it and replaced it with the ?quad? pole 240v breaker so I could (continue to) have the hvac, and add a 240 outlet for an air compressor.
I decided I was going to push the levers until it broke, or reset, and luckily it reset.... now if easily flips between on and off. Thank you to everyone who replied

Quad pole? Did you purchase those half @$$ed half size breakers ?
Unless the poles are linked , it's not a two pole breaker for use on single phase 208/240,480 or 600V loads.
Sorry but you should not be touching anything electrical. Hire a pro before you burn the place down or kill somebody.

Take the breaker out of the panel and see if it will hold in the on position.. Plugging it into the panel may have tweaked it.. If is still doesn't hold check continuity between where it plugs on to the panel to each output. Might I ask what brand ??? It sounds like a bad breaker !!!

Some of those 1/2 sized breakers will not fit in every breaker space . The buss bars are usually not punched for 1/2 sized breakers in the entire panel. Otherwise some Bubba would fill an entire panel with 1/2 breakers and overload the panel.

Umm, you might want to brush up on Eaton's current offerings: Eaton Type BR, BQ Quadplex Circuit Breaker, two 30 Amp 2 pole breakers-BQ230230 - The Home Depot

Got my 3-way single pole double throw illuminated light switch today, cant wait to hook it up. I have a good idea it will be easy to find when I walk in my basement at night cause I just hooked up a single pole single throw illuminated light switch in my garage last week-end, when the switch is off the switch lights up, clearly seeing it in the dark.
I still think that the 3-way description of a switch is miss-leading and to me makes no sense, in my mind double pole description describes it better and HomeDepot will most likely understand it better when I walk in there saying I want 7 single pole switches and 4 double pole switches.
I wonder if the Amish people have the same problems with, a single pole single throw candle or a 3-way single pole double throw lamp.

My guess is that they will be confused, or they will point you to 4 way switches (which are actually double pole double throw switches) rather than 3 way switches (which are actually single pole double throw switches).

The difference is that a 3 way switch (SPDT) has 3 terminals, A, B and C. Moving the switch chooses if terminal A or terminal B is connected to terminal C.
With a 4 way (DPDT) switch, it has 4 terminals, A, B, C and D.
With the switch down, A is connected to C and B is connected to D.
With the switch up, A is connected to D and B is connected to C.

Hmm not the same .. There is a difference between a dpdt switch and a 4 way switch...

double-pole or 4-way switch ?

There is no way I'm gonna get into double pole double throw switch, DPDT. The ABC switch is as far as I dare to go, mother always said I'd get by if I'd just learn my ABC's., she's right I became a weldah.

Yes, a pair of jumpers.
Here is a 3 way vs a 4 way (and how they interconnect) from that thread:

From Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Switch#Contact_terminology
DPST: A to C, B to D and the wires are connected when its on:

DPDT: A to C or E and B to D or F (in some cases, there is also a center "off" position).

In the case of a 4 way switch, there is a jumper between C and F and another between D and E.

A DPDT has 6 terminals.

Those lighted switches are the greatest. We have a walkout basement, and it was impossible to find the switch at night when entering the basement. Installed a switch that lit up when turned off, now we are living the good life...except for those times when *someone* places an object on the floor between the door and light switch (about 2 steps)...

It's a hold over from fluid valves.
A simple shutoff valve with two ports could be called a two way valve, as there are two ways that fluid go in/out of the valve body.

A 'Y' valve would have three ports, and would be called a three way valve.
And a simmilar switch with three terminals is callled a three way switch.
