Opening up a spring with a track-hoe

/ Opening up a spring with a track-hoe #121
It is in a thread about welding that I came across. As I recall the text, you had made the hook in a hurry during a short last day of class. This site still has me confused about getting positive search results, or finding a thread I have been to before unless I keep a log of the exact thread name and page # of interest, which so far I have not done.
Is there a way to "bookmark" the threads within the TBN storage system?
There are many interesting and educational threads on TBN, even for an old duffer like me that knows it all, or used to think so anyway, but finding them without a lot of time consuming unrelated browsing is difficult. A lot is probably caused by the folks trying to give their threads a unique catchy name I suppose.
Ron

Just above & to the right of the top post on any page of the thread you want to bookmark, look for "Thread Tools", which is a drop-down menu - The bottom choice is "Subscribe to this Thread"

I think there's a way to bookmark a specific post, but not sure about that.

Thank you very much.
I tried the "permalink" button but nothing showed up in "My Home"
The threads where I have opened my big yap send me an email when there is new activity.
This will be a big time saver.
Thanks again
Ron

You must have your options set to automatically subscribe you whenever you "open your big yap" ...

The way I described allows you to subscribe without "opening your big yap"

Love that term!

Is this the "ORTHIS" pond?
Now that's a pond!

Ron

Here is a picture I took this morning of the Orthis Pond, from about the same spot (different camera), after the drought of 2011.

Don,
That is amazing.
Does the pond normally dry out in August that much compared to May or is this an exceptional year of drought?

It only gets this low in a drought year. in the 15 years since it was built this is only the second time it has gotten this low.

The spring pond continues to rise an inch a day, it is now touching the white rock around the large culvert.

The wild pigs have found the spring pond and there were about 50 in it the other evening. they scrambled quickly into the brush when they saw Whipper. I'll try to get a picture soon.

I like the way you put the pictures together. As soon as it stops rising (or it gets to the spillway) I'm going to take a picture and maybe you could put a before it was dug out picture, a after it was dug out but no water picture, and a full picture!

Don,
I'd be glad to accommodate your picture request.
It would work much better with higher resolution images. Your camera will
take pictures up to 3264 x 2448 pixels. I would imagine you are reducing them in size for TBN. It is always best to take pictures at the highest resolution available, that's what you pay for in digital cameras, since many pictures are a one time only opportunity and you don't know what you may want to use them for.. It is simple to reduce digital images but they
don't enlarge very well.
When you get the shots you want combined, using the maximum resolution you have been using to take the ones you already have of the project, if they are much larger than the ones you have been posting, you may have to send them as PM. I recall jinman saying PM through TBN has a restriction on attachments. He has one of my private email address so if TBN blocks you sending your pictures you can get it from him.
I'm glad to hear the new pond is still rising at a good rate.

Don,
Almost a month since this last report.
Has the pond filled yet?

The rate of fill is slowing. It is still about a foot+ before it will overflow. It is now rising about 1/8" a day (one neighbors pond dropped 2" yesterday because of the wind and heat, 100 yesterday). The underground water level in this area has dropped and neighbors water wells are going dry. The drought continues. More oak trees are dying each week. It's not even green over the septic line anymore. I'm waiting for it to fill to get the picture.

I do believe the spring pond is now full. It has rained 5" since it was dug out which help it a lot and the cows started drinking from the other ponds. Only the connecting piece of the 30" culvert is out of the water. I have ordered a 3' extension to bring it up to make the wishing well top. My gravel base is under water and will need about 6" more. This will be a fun winter project.

Pictures of the installed culvert. The spring water is coming in now around the culvert where the gravel was placed. When that gets clogged up it will come out the culvert which is 1" below the water level (well, that's the plan anyway). The part you see sticking out is the connecting piece with a screen on top to keep animals from falling in the 6' by 30" culvert.

Are you going to smooth the banks and seed them with grass to control erosion? I had some steep banks that took years to cover on their own with weeds and got quite a bit of dirt washing back into the pond.

I did!!!!

But the rains came before the grass grew.
I guess you're suggesting a repeat.
More seat time, not a problem......:D

Well, it looks like your crushed rock actually aided grass seed to sprout. Perhaps the mud silted in the gravel and held long enough for the seeds to germinate. If you have more gravel to spread a thin layer, you might slow the erosion and get germination the next time you re-seed. Just a thought. . . . BTW: The water level looks perfect. When it clears, you'll have an even prettier little pond.

Thanks Jim. Where there is mostly sand the water is brown where there is black clay the water is green. Here is a pic of the other pond I cleaned out with the FEL. I still have dam dirt work to do. The water is 4' deep and has another 6' more to rise (it will be up to the two small trees on the right) before it goes over the spillway. The clay pond water is clear/green and I can see the bottom.

Did you ever get back to laying the pavers on your driveway?

I finished the inner and outer curbing. Today I put the first sectional cross beam in, later this week the second cross beam and then starting the new year a new thread "Laying the first of 10,000 pavers!:D

Last Saturday I tested the heart and ran a 5 mile hilly trail run in the morning and mixed, poured and worked 41 bags of cement in the afternoon. One day rest and good to go again....

Don, you really need to find something to do with all your spare time.;)

When you get the new thread up, can you post a link here?
