Shop and storage barn

Great build! I like the pic of the concrete truck with the long front mounted chute- It looks like its close to 20 feet long and able to get way into the middle of the foor. Was there any concern about the weight of the truck right next to the footers causing any damage?

Im in planning stage on a shop building and would love to avoid having to pay for a pumper truck to come out for doing the footers and then again for the floor. The soil here is real sandy and I wonder if it will tolerate the 60 or 80K pound cement truck right next to the footers and forms. Nice work on your building, Dave

Well, there has been lots of progress over the past several weeks. These are from about 3 weeks ago and show the roof framing going up. It's pretty complex with the peak, shed, and large dormer.

And here we are today. The roof is all ready for the standing seam which should go up late this week or next. The windows are also just about all in, and the siding will start to go up this week.

I've been a wiring mad-mad for the past week, and just finished up all the rough-in today including alarm and smoke detectors, network, etc. The crew has some more strapping and some foam board to put up and we'll be ready for insulation next week.

That looks great! Are you keeping the stone fence? It really looks nice in front of the building.

Wow! Look at all those bays!!!

I want one... now all I need to do is move outside the city limits...

Very impressive Hayden. I have a question for you. Between this outbuilding and your solar upgrade project; do you ever sleep?

Yes, absolutely! Damaging one of those old walls is a capital offense in my book. These walls (they are on three sides of the area where the building sits) presented one of the biggest challenges in the original siting of the building. I'm very please with how it came out. It's deceptive in the pictures, but the wall you see is between 20' and about 40' away from the building. There will be a drive between the building and wall to access the single large door to the shop. All in all the building tucks into the space really well and helps temper the overall mass of the structure. You'd think I knew what I was doing, but it's more the result of luck.

Having just gotten up, the answer is yes, but not well. I had this darn project running through my head all night, and my back is killing me.

Keep in mind that there's a crew of 4-5 pros doing 90% of the shop and all the progess you see happened while I was away for three weeks goofing off. That said, it's crunch time again since the insulators are scheduled for Monday and if the wires aren't burried by then, they never will be.....

The push is on again on the solar system since the old system wasn't holding up to the load of all the saws and compressors. I switched to the new system for one day as an experiment and all the problems went away, so I temporarily rigged up the generator to recharge the batteries and haven't gone back. However it's all manual, so I really need the solar panels before I can leave again.

Beautiful job ! I also need one ! Did you consider radiant heat in the slab ? I am thinking it might be worth putting in the pex even if I don't get around to the heating portion of the program for a while, someday tie it into a small wood boiler. Just have to watch any anchors in the slab .Are you giving tours ? Might sell the Mrs. on the project if see saw a shop as nice as yours !

Thanks. Tours are available, but they will cost you a day's labor ;)

Yes, I considered PEX in the slab. I think it would be the prefered approach for a building that will be kept heated to more or less the same temp all the time. There's a lot of thermal mass in 30 yrds of concrete which is great when you want to hold a temperature, but bad when you want to keep the building at 50 or so except when working on the tractor or something like that and need to bring it up to 60 or 65 for a day. The latter is how I expect to use the shop, so I opted for four wall-mount radiators. I have to say, a warm floor sure would be nice while working under the tractor, but I think the radiators will work best under my situation. Your needs may be different.

Yes, there is quite a lag in heating all that mass but it can be a good thing too. Might lend itself to another solar collector . I was thinking of a modine type unit heater mounted high up for quick recovery. Be glad to help out for a day, haven't played with a dozer yet. :D

Progress has continued on the shop while I've been working on the solar panels. The roofer started yesterday and made good progress through today. He's probably got 2-3 more days to complete it.

In the last picture you can see the siding going up starting on the left corner. We got the barn-board pre-stained on all sides which will help preserve the wood. A second coat will be applied later in the fall.

The insulators are due to start Tuesday. In preparation for them the ceilings needed to be closed in to hold the blown in cellulose. On the second floor, the flat part of the ceiling got wallboard since the 16+ inches of cellulose will be more than enough insulation. The sloped parts can only hold 11" (rafter depth), so they get 1" foam board. Here's the room from a number of different angles.
