I'm sure the mention the spray but I don't remember what it was. I had the show recorded on the PC but I just erased 13 episodes last night.

Sounds just like squash vine borers. Some say they come in the seed package. You can use Sevin dust, I believe generic in carbaryl. That's right, though, once they are in the plant it's probably gone.
