YM 2500 brake

why is the vent tube, coming from top of brake housing, connected to the opposite brake vent tube? just makes a loop. Looks like it should just be vented to outside air. also, what purpose does the pipe plug serve, in bottom of housing. just traps water in. Maybe the Japanese had it to keep rice paddy water out. thanks.

the plug served to drain water out of the brake housing. You should have 1 vent tube per side. The way your's is connected is incorrect

They run these things half submerged. There should be two vent hoses, ending just under the seat cushion.

And that probably is a brake drain plug.

On my 2wd the lube instructions say to pull the little plug on each kingpin assembly (the 'hinges' at each end of the front axle) and drain water out before greasing. That plug is maybe 10 inches off the ground. I would have to be bogged down pretty bad before water would go in there!

thanks for the info on the brake vents. I will connect them properly. wonder how you keep 'dirt daubers' from getting in the free end? any ideas??

Maybe cut up the filter from a filtered cigarette and stuff it in the end of the vent hose? I don't know.

My ignition switch was flaky when I bought the tractor. After replacing it I cut it open and it was stuffed solid with pillbug husks. Apparently they could get in the 1/16 drain hole but couldn't find the way out. Likewise I killed the regulator trying to hose off a mud dauber or maybe wasp nest under it. I didn't see until too late there were high-current wire wound resistors under there and I had shorted them. After sorting out several problems caused by the previous owner and a couple I caused myself, I haven't had another problem.

On my tractor, the brake vent tubes are too small for the Dirt Daubers to get in. The vent on the transmission case is big enough for them to get in. I stuck a plastic wire tie wrap in my vent tube and that was enough to keep them out. Something similar would have worked, a little piece of wire would be sufficient to discourage them. I know these "dirt daubers" can be agravating, but they serve a purpose. They eat spiders.

California, you gave me an idea. At first I thought one of those clear plastic in-line fuel filters, but then they would just stop up the open end of the filter. Then I thought about Aquarium bubble stones. Some packages are labeled aquarium air stone. The are used to make little bubbles to aerate the water in a fish aquarium. They are available in the fish section of many box stores like Walmart. They also come in a 2 pack and are usually less than $3.00. They have a graduated plastic tube connection that goes from about 1/8" to 1/4" in steps. Just plug them in to the open end of the vent tubes.
