I filled my cans at a station that apparently pumps regular diesel by default, but if you push the button, it pumps DEF. I was confused by this and put about half a gallon in my 5 gallon can. It's hard to get a clear answer by searching online so I thought I'd ask on here. Do you think it's safe to use this can that is 90$ diesel and 10% DEF on my Kioti CS2510?
Thanks for any help/advice.

NO! Get rid of (how - I'm leaving that to you) that DEF. Flush the can (again - up to you how) and once dry, fill up with the proper fuel.

I have never had a diesel that required DEF, but a quick read shows it's BAD NEWS when mixed with diesel and run through an engine.
I'm really surprised that it would be pumped through the same dispensing hose just requiring a push button selection.
Definitely don't use the contaminated fuel in your machine.

Absolutely not. Dispose of properly and flush the can with about 1/2 gallon of clean diesel. Then refill. No not run DEF of any amount through the fuel system.
Hope this helps.

I wouldn't use that pump or station! Should be 2 separate nozzles and if station in area that goes below freezing, should be behind a heated door to keep the DEF from freezing in the nozzle! Run from that station!

I just looked it up DEF is 67.5% water!!! As everyone else said DO NOT USE!!! If you have a burn pile it would make a good starter!!!!!

THANK YOU ALL! For saving me from a very expensive mistake. I agree that it is awfully odd to have one hose and a tank that dispenses DEF or regular diesel. I'm going to drive back and take pictures, which I'll post. I'll also talk to the store personnel to see if they can explain it to me. Thank you all again. I will follow up in a day or two.

I revisited the station. The manager was not there and nobody could give me any information. I'm attaching photos and a closeup of the instruction on the pump. There is only one hose, but it looks like the pump offers DEF and diesel. Two prices are on the pump as well. I tried pushing the DEF button and nothing happened, What do you all think?

Instructions say to open DEF nozzle door then press the yellow DEF button to dispense it.

I thought that was the case as you couldn't possibly have 1 nozzle for both! DEF in diesel is bad! Diesel in DEF is bad!

Agree looks like dispenses both but on all the DEF equipment that I have been around the DEF nozzle is smaller in diameter.

If dispenses both through same nozzle I would buy my diesel elsewhere.

You didn't get anything mixed with your diesel that you dispensed.
I see what you're saying. I misinterpreted the instructions and thought that just pressing the yellow button resulted in DEF being dispensed. Now that I know what DEF is, it makes sense that there is another nozzle, although I don't see where the "nozzle access door is". But it must be there somewhere with a separate hose that dispenses DEF, and you are correct that I did not get any of it.
Thank you very much for your explanation. I feel much better about this.

Gotta admit, just seeing the pics as presented, those are a little confusing.

Also, why would you mix On Road with Off Road? Kinda defeats the purpose, no?

Aqueous solutions and Diesel won't mix well. If you had it in a glass container you would see the line for water (which should be heavier than diesel and on the bottom), and the diesel above. It wouldn't take much to separate the two.

If you just pour a little into a jar, you will get whatever comes out of your can first. If you shake it up before pouring into the jar, it may turn cloudy, then separate over time.

If you have any doubts, then do some tests before using the diesel.

Now that we know NOT to use DEF in our tractors, what IS it used for?

Seen containers sold at stations. Never knew the purpose.

Some tractors and pretty much every truck sold in the last 10 years do require def. But it doesn’t mix with the fuel ever on any machine. There’s a separate tank with a blue cap for def. Mixing def with the fuel will result in the absolute best case scenario the engine stalling out on the water. Catastrophic damage to the fuel system is likely.
