I had a local forester recommend allowing as many young ash making as you can, even if the ash borer eventually gets them. This will maybe keep them around enough to potentially find a solution in the near future maybe?
You know there is a vaccine for them correct? I believe you need to use it every three years. Me, I'd not plant ash trees.

I started down that road to try to preserve a mature ash at my last house. I only did it one year because I don't like putting chemicals in the ground, especially ones that are toxic to pollinators.

There is no vaccine for ash trees, but there are effective treatments, primarily through trunk injections of systemic insecticides to protect them from the emerald ash borer (EAB). These treatments are often administered by licensed professionals and use active ingredients like emamectin benzoate or imidacloprid, which are injected directly into the tree's vascular system to protect it from the pest

I don't remember what it was, but it was something I was supposed to pour around the roots. Not only would it kill insects in the ground but since it would be taken by the limbs and leaves it would kill insects in the canopy too. It just wasn't worth it to me to save that tree. I don't know if the trunk injection has the same problem.

I tried that, but with , at the time, a few hundred dying Ash, it was not realistic.
I tried to focus on one that was in great shape, the treatment just delayed the inevitable.
The Borers are still in the area feeding on young trees.

Never heard of that. Going to look into that.

Dr Google and Mr. Ai says,
“Yes, trimmer line can have a shelf life, as it may become brittle and less effective over time, especially if not stored properly. To extend its lifespan, it's recommended to keep it away from direct sunlight and moisture, and some users suggest storing it in water to maintain flexibility.”

I learn something every day. For those of you storing your string in water, do you make your water from melting dry ice? ;):unsure:
The nylon strings are made form gets micro cracks which the water is suppose to alleviate. YRMV.

I stuck some trimmer line in my pants pocket thinking I'd need more clearing some fence line last week and forgot about it until I found it in the clothes washing machine today.

I guess I'll have to test it to see if it makes it last longer.

Putting up trail markers to keep us from striking rocks, logs and stumps at the edge of the trail over the winter. These are reflective at the top, fiberglass rod that's 5/16 thick and 5ft tall. Could have used 6ft tall ones. That's a long 1/2 HSS drill we are using to get to them in.

With heavy snow predicted here in the next 24 hours, I'm also marking problem areas to ease plowing. I have a supply of those fiberglass markers, but they are difficult to drive into frozen ground. Nice idea you have using a drill. In my case, I carry a sharpened length of 3/8" rebar and a hammer to drive a hole first. Makes it a snap to insert the marker.

We tried the rod driving system but hit rocks and found some logs to good of shape to do that. Also hit my hand trying to drive some in..... The drill option was 90% safer, quicker and didn't mind making holes in those logs.
