Charlie, should we re-open the old one with 5922 posts, or start a new one?

When I was a kid, I heard about what great sport dove hunting was, so I took my trusty 12 gauge and shot one, decided there wasn't enough meat there to be worth a shotgun shell, so I never shot at another one. Of course, in later years, I learned there were more than one variety of dove; some bigger than others.

Bird-- I think you should go with the old one, it's kind of a history time-capsule.

I did have great day Dove hunting yesterday. Being with some old friends and meeting some new friends. There was 3 young boys and both of their Grandfathers and a Great Uncle, so it was fun to watch a family pass on their hunting tradition. The 2 older boys were old enough to hunt by themselves and the young one was moving pass being a "bird boy" to actually hunt.

It's been so long since the last time I went Dove hunting that my shooting skills seemed to have eroded. I think the birds are skinnier these days and that accounts for most of my misses.

I don't mind cleaning the birds so I got to do the messy work. I have only cooked them one way so I'm open to anyone who has a good recipe.(Wrapped in bacon & grilled)

Bird- You do have to have a lot of Doves or Quail(my favorite) if you're looking for a meal. We'll wait till Deer Season to see if anyone shows up with some Venison to have a big meal.

I had just started hitting doves with a 20 guage when Dad decided to quit dove and quail hunting to deer hunt. Seems as I remember, all our hunting pastures were being encroached on by subdivisions. I'll never forget the youth model single shot 410 I got for Christmas. That one and only Christmas we spent with my Grandpa on the farm in the Panhandle. Two days later it snowed. We hunted Quail and I remember following tracks in the snow of my Uncle's bird dog following the quail that went to ground. Also, those big quail aren't quail. Dad shot the biggest and it was a Prairie Chicken, which are protected, that was flying with the quail.
It all truly is a bonding experience.

Dove hunting has been "not so good " the past few yrs ... I started seeing a few more the last coupe yrs ... I'm thinking because I've been planting wheat and milo (May be way off base) ... So I bought me a bird dog and she'll be 7 months next week ... Training has been going real well.. I've used young chicks to help her understand "be gentle" she's alerting on them and when they pin down she points ... I retrieve with her guiding her softness... No kills ... She is not gun shy and if I remember how to shoot one !!! Together we will retrieve ...

Only got to hunt Mon AM but was my dad, me, my 2 boys and wife in the field. I didn't really care about the birds at that point, life was good......

My 8yr old got his first dove, great cross shot with a 20 ga single shot. Cooked em up tonight wrapped in bacon. He says "umm this dove is great, best I've ever had" of course it was the only dove hes ever had :)

Great memories...

Brandi--I had a .22/.410 O/U and Dad always said that if you can get good with that .410 you could hit anything. The guys went back out Mon. afternoon and got 9 more. Not bad but we need a good front & wind from the North.

BR open the gate and let go of that wind.
