We just got back from the Denton County Farmer's Market. There were only 4 vendors there this morning. One of them told me some others had signed up; didn't know if they're coming or not. We did buy white and yellow squash and zucchini, okra, peaches, tomatoes, and purple hull peas. They didn't have any watermelons, figs, or blackeyed peas. The purple hulls and cream peas were already shelled in zip lock bags. They did have cantaloupes, onions, corn on the cob, potatoes, round and yellow zucchini, as well as the regular zucchini.

According to my calculations you are about $500 ahead, not counting labor, compared to my accumulation of veggies this no rain year.

:laughing:Don, at the north end of our street is an older couple who have a home that was here before the town and other development. And he has a big vegetable garden every year, but we were by there this morning and I've never seen his garden looking so sickly. Even the okra looks like it's dying from lack of water, and I didn't see a thing that looked like any harvest in the future. Of course we haven't had even a trace of rain in the past 3 weeks.

Bird,
It has rained here 16 out of the last 18 days and the ground never warmed up much after planting the garden in May as the weather was abnormally cold so the gardens here are pretty much drowned out. Last year we had a drought all summer but with watering every other evening we had a good yield. I'm ready for some old fashioned normally balanced weather, but that is not predicted for years to come.

Yep, Ron, it's amazing, isn't it how some get too much rain and some too little.

Bird, the old Trade Square was on the east side of the square between Mulberry and Hickory street in the 2nd block diagonally across from the 1st Methodist Church. It died when they put in parking meters and started charging timed parking for the vendors. I think the farmers considered that their area and were insulted when Denton decided to make parking there a profit center.

Kyle did you sign the petition to re-name Lee County. Every big wall of clouds and rain that approaches the county divides and goes on either side leaving us dry. The new name will be Moses County.

Yep, but I want to allow choices on the ballot. Like Jim stated, Sahara, Gobi, etc. I recently saw some show where they claimed some mountain area in Chile or Argentina being the driest place on earth. They haven't been to our county lately.

Western; I know a good chiropractor. He's in W'ford, but good and honest, and very competent. PM me if you want his number. Sorry to hear about your back.

Lou; Which Scotch did you find that was no carb, or low carb? I may want to add a couple of bottles of it to my liquor cabinet!

Chivas might get me spoiled, Lou, but if whiskey is carb free, I have plenty of Evan Williams as well as some Jack Daniels around here! :D Thanks, Lou! I don't mind the ice, on a hot summer day, but usually forego it in the winter!

I understand that you will be 29! That's a great age! I hear folks say "Life begins at 30", but I'm not sure if I'll ever find out. ;)

Well it was a toasty 85*, sure it was closer to 125* standing on the asphalt!! I also found out that using a jackhammer is not nice for my lower back. After feeling better the last 2 weeks, (after 14 months of Hydrocodone), I went and done it again:mad: Had to call off the 2nd job for last night, which sucks.

BTW, we got down to around 24" deep before we started getting "cooler" earth, it is amazing how much "baking" goes on under a parking lot!.

Jim, this is the 1st time I have had to water to this degree, even in sandy gardens before. I did dig a few rows up and am pretty sure that the moles still effect me even after not seeing sign for almost 3 weeks. The trails they made under my rows are still there and there is little doubt I am fighting that. I will be on them suckers like you know what next year.

So far I really like the soaker hoses and will get more, they are convenient, especially added with the straw mulch. I dont know if I will get enough to have an official "hose array", but I will get enough to get the job done:D

Tried the 3 cantelopes the wife picked, 2 where PAST their prime, but one was not half bad:thumbsup: Have had better though.

Time for painkillers and an early bed, you guys do good in the heat today, sure "aint" Disney land out there!!!

Dennis,
Sorry to hear about your back. Maybe it's time to let the young'ens do it, or get a backhoe or skid steer with a hammer on it.
hugs, Brandi

We got somewhere around 3/16ths of an inch of rain either Sunday night, Monday, or Tuesday. May have been more, as I only checked the gage late last night.
hugs, Brandi

Brandi, you are talking sense! I'd want the equipment to do the work!

Well, here's some pictures of my monster tomato. Now bear in mind that Lou's tomato was over twice the size of this one, but I didn't use nuclear waste as fertilizer nor water with Lone Star Beer.;) Still, I'm mighty proud of this tomato because it is easily the biggest tomato I've ever grown. I think it's big because the plant only had a dozen tomatoes while the others of the same type had twice that many. I didn't thin the vine down, but it was shaded by a fast growing Sweet 100 cherry tomato plant and only set a dozen tomatoes. Also, it's a determinate type (BHN602) and only makes one crop of fruit. Lou, I pass the TBN blue ribbon to you and gladly take 2nd place.:D
