Re: Spencer\'s Pole Barn Project

Here is a picture of the approach right before I put two coats of sealer on it. I should mention that all of the concrete that I had this crew pour was a "six-sack" mix with the fiber additive. The concrete that they poured inside the barn was on top of a vapor barrier so the concrete supplier recommended adding a "superplasticizer". When using a superplasticizer you don't need to add as much water to the mix. All of the concrete was poured 4" deep except for that 16'x16' section inside the barn. I had them pour that 16'x16' section 6" thick.

Re: Spencer\'s Pole Barn Project

Here is the last picture for now. This shows what the 4' section looked like after two coats of sealer. The concrete crew is coming back in a day or two to cut in all of the control joints.

Re: Spencer\'s Pole Barn Project

If anyone is counting all of the concrete so far adds up to 2976 square feet.

Lean-To for tractor
12'x24'=288

Inside main barn
32'x32'=1024
24'x32'=768
16x16'=256
Total inside = 2048 + 288 Lean-To = 2336 under the roof

Outside barn
4'x32'=128
16'x32'=512
Total outside = 640

I call it a 'bull' float, as I have heard it called as well.

Great accomplishment. You have been a long time waiting for this stage, and now with landscaping, it will certainly be a show piece.

Now to fill it with 'toys'. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

How far are you away from 31/196?

I'm only 30-40 miles from there. We have a plant up that way but I'm not there often. It's an easy enough drive, maybe Mossroad and I could both meet you one day. You ever down 31 around the Indiana Toll Road? That's a stones throw from both work and home for me /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Ah, you're going to be doing the brand spanky new Taco Bell in town, huh? I drive by it fairly frequently. It appears to be a new bulding design from all of the other Taco Bell's I've seen.

I'll PM you with my number(s). We have all kinds of new places to chose from if we can meet for a meal. Do you know where you'll be staying yet?

( So are you close to retiring yet? )

Well, uh, yes, you might say that. 24 working days from today. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

( Are you close to getting a tractor yet? )

Well, uh, no, not exactly. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif We're going to be doing "a little" traveling starting in September, so that's on hold for a bit. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

That's quite a buggy you've got yourself there! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif I spotted it in one of your earlier pictures, but hadn't mentioned anything yet. I've seen a fellow around here towing one just about exactly the same. Pretty cool looking machine! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

It's been winter for a while now and the barn still is not closed it, I am getting closer though.

This is no longer Spencer's Pole Barn Project. This is now Spencer's Pole Barn Quest.

Re: Spencer\'s Pole Barn Project

I'm going to back track a little bit here with the pictures. I did get some soffit up and all the plywood on the ceiling on the lean-to side of the pole barn back in April. I just never had the time to post the pictures then.

Here I am putting some plywood up on the ceiling in the lean-to with a little help from my TC33-D.

Here is a picture of the soffit on the lean-to. Unfortunately, this was about all the further I got on the soffit until Thanksgiving.

Re: Spencer\'s Pole Barn Project

I am going to have a 4 foot sidewalk around the complete perimeter of the barn. I was hoping to get the sidewalk finished before winter, but it did not happen.

Here a picture of part of the sidewalk that I did get finished. Once the sidewalk was done on the front and side of the barn I was able to cover up all of my sand with crushed asphalt as you can see in the picture. I can't wait until I get every last inch of sand covered up.

By the way this picture was taken on September 30th.

Re: Spencer\'s Pole Barn Project

Things got pretty busy for me this summer and fall. I have been traveling around the country installing commercial food service equipment (mostly Taco Bells) for the last 16 years. My wife and daughter were fed up with my constant absence so I put in my 10-week notice. I am self-employed, but I did not want to leave my customers hanging. I ended up working about 14 weeks instead of 10, but then I had to hang it up. I have been working on the barn as much as possible since around Thanksgiving. My younger brother was in town for the holiday and he gave me a hand for a few days. He helped me hang all of my F-channel for the rest of the soffit as well as giving me a hand figuring out how much steel to order for the siding.

Here is a picture of the completed soffit on the front of the barn.

Re: Spencer\'s Pole Barn Project

I will have three overhead doors on the front of the barn and one overhead door on the side. The jerk who designed this barn (me), left each door opening 9" wider than it needed to be. I don't remember why I did that, I probably just didn't know exactly what size to make them so I made sure they were oversized.

Anyway, I had to add a lot of lumber to frame up these door jambs and headers.

In this picture you can see that I added 5 2x6's to the side of the existing 4x6. I then added two more 2x6's to both the inside and the outside face of this column to finish it off. I had to do this to six different columns. I went through a lot of lumber and a lot of nails, but I got it done.

Re: Spencer\'s Pole Barn Project

Here is a picture from inside the shop looking outside of that same side entrance. You can see that I also got the plywood on the ceiling in this area.

I wanted to the plywood up before my overhead doors got installed. I didn't want to have to try and piece it in around the garage door railings after the fact.

I was out there until almost 10 pm on Tuesday trying to get enough plywood up before my garage door guys showed up on Wednesday morning.

Here is the first door panel being installed.
