Re: Spencer\'s Pole Barn Project

Mosey, I had the fill sand delivered 14 tons per dumptruck load and usually 3 loads at a time. I just had him put it in different piles around the building site. To start spreading it out from the piles I used my rear blade but I used it on my loader thanks to my Kasco Switch-Hitch. The attached photo shows me using the same setup to spread out some crushed concrete on my driveway. It was incredible the amount of reach I had with the blade on front. I could raise it up and grab sand from the top of the pile and drag it backwards. It would have taken me forever to pick up bucket fulls and spread it around that way. I talked about the setup in <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.tractorbynet.com/cgi-bin/compact/showflat.pl?Cat=&Board=projects&Number=153770&page=&view=&sb=&o=&vc=1>this</A> thread. After I got the sand roughly spread out with the blade on the front I put the bucket back on and mounted the blade back on the rear of the tractor. It took quite a while to finish it up but it got faster with more practice. I would spread it all out, then compact it with my lawn roller. Then I sprinkled it for hours and then compacted it again before I had the next loads of fill brought in.

Re: Spencer\'s Pole Barn Project

I should probably show you guys what I am trying to build. This image is of the front of the building. There will be a 10' high by 10' wide door on the left and then two 10' high by 9' wide doors. On the left side you will see the 12' by 24' lean-to that will house the tractor. On the right side is a 16' by 16' addition that will be off of the shop.

Here is the right side of the building. It shows a 10' high by 10' wide door that will be the main enterance to the shop area. I will post a top view in the next message so you can get a better idea of the layout.

Re: Spencer\'s Pole Barn Project

Here is the top view of the pole barn. The only thing that has changed is the lean-to dimensions. I originally thought I could only make it 16' long due to some trees. I am happy to say that it is a full 24' long with plenty of room to get in and out of it with the tractor.

Re: Spencer\'s Pole Barn Project

Moving ahead I have 10 or 11 poles up in this picture. There is actually 11 poles but 10 holes. I am setting a shorter 4" by 6" right next to a taller 6" by 6". I am doing this on either side of the 16' by 16' opening for the shop. Because of the 16' span I will have a glulam beam across the span for the trusses in that section. The glulam beam will sit on the 4" by 6"s and it will be sandwiched between two 16 ' 2" by 12"s which will attach to the taller 6" by 6"s.

Re: Spencer\'s Pole Barn Project

I am building the barn quite a ways from my house. There is 201 feet nearest point to nearest point. I did this for a variety of reasons and I talked about that in <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.tractorbynet.com/cgi-bin/compact/showflat.pl?Cat=&Board=off&Number=197333&page=&view=&sb=&o=&vc=1>this</A> thread. Here is a view of the barn from the roof of my house.

Re: Spencer\'s Pole Barn Project

Jumping ahead to October now. I have most of the poles up but no time to work on the project. October is the busiest time of the year for me with my work.

Re: Spencer\'s Pole Barn Project

Now it is into November and the push is on to get this project going. I am pretty much done working on the road but I have many other things besides the pole barn that also need my attention. I have a few rows of horizontal girts on in this photo.

Re: Spencer\'s Pole Barn Project

Just when I started making some real progress mother nature steps in. I was just getting ready to put up the first of the 16 foot 2" by 12" truss carriers when it started to snow. Luckily the lift that I had made for my loader worked perfectly to lift these monsters up to the proper height. I talked about the lift in <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.tractorbynet.com/cgi-bin/compact/showflat.pl?Cat=&Board=buildit&Number=212009&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=0&fpart=>this</A> thread.

Re: Spencer\'s Pole Barn Project

Well I have this thread almost up to date now. That first night it snowed I got 4 inches of snow on my compound miter saw, air compressor, nailer, and my generator. That was not a good feeling at all. They were predicting a nasty storm for this last weekend so I went out and got some tarps. There not pretty but they sure have helped so far. Here is the first shot of my new temporary workshop.

Here is the third view of the shop. What a difference these tarps make. We had some of the strongest winds in months this weekend.

Re: Spencer\'s Pole Barn Project

Now I have a question for all of you. I am getting (hopefully) the trusses delivered on Thursday. We are getting into the winter season up here in Michigan and I really want to get this roof on. I am worried about getting it started and not finished. What I am thinking is just getting the o.s.b. on, covering it up with something, and wait until spring to shingle it. I don't think tar paper (or whatever is currently used) will hold up all winter long by itself. Although the blue tarps are working for a temporary shop I don't want a blue tarp roof all winter, it probably wouldn't hold up anyway. I am wondering if that Tyvek house wrap stuff might do the trick. I've never seen anybody use it on a roof before but you guys have probably not seen anybody do half the stuff I have done in this post and its various links. So I am open to suggestions, I don't want to break down and hire somebody to do the roof for me. It's not just the money, I have done almost all of what you see so far all by myself and that means a lot to me. Do you think Tyvek would hold up? Any other suggestions? Even if I had the time to put the shingles on I am afraid they would not seal in these temperatures.

Re: Spencer\'s Pole Barn Project

I do not think that the 3 tab shingles will seal either for you. There are interlocking shingles that they use here in Dakota so that they can shingle in the winter. They work just as well as the 3 tab, but they do look a little different when they are done.

I do believe that the blue tarps will hold up better than the house wrap, providing that it properly secured so that the wind cannot get under it and whip it.
