Choker Chain Grab Hook. Push it under the fallen log/tree, hook on to the choker chain, and then pull the choker chain under. A lot easier than pushing the pin end of the choker chain under and then trying to find it to grab it with your finger tips and pull it thru.
I just want you to know, last weekend was probably the umpteenth one since I first saw your chain hook that I've have kicked myself for not yet getting around tuit and making one  I'm absolutely certain I have more time invested in fishing under logs for chain than it would have taken to make a half dozen of these.

Let's leave this as a physics question and not a moral one. We don't know it's an abandoned rail, private rail spur, or what. Now, legally, if you remove anything from the Rail right of way it's theft; even if it's old bent spikes, or other complete trash.

Well, I looked up the local information for CSX and sent them an email to ask after the status of that section, and asking about buying it, or some other scrap rail, or even if any other scrap rail would be available for me to buy.

My approach is always, you can't get shot for asking, but you sure can for taking without asking...

Thanks for the information and opinions, I'm always interested in the diversity of my fellow TBN'ers thoughts, experiences, and outlooks.

if your are close to a rail maintenance yard ask for unused ends. I got a 23" piece for nothing. By the way, my 23" piece weighed over 40 lbs. so a 12' piece would be very heavy.

Since we got past the question of who it belongs to I would take a oxy-acetylene torch in the back if the truck spend 5 minutes cutting off the 16 inches you want for an anvil. Leave the rest rather than try to pick it up.

I was doing that with my chunk to split with my Father-In-Law, made a mess, ended up using a angle grinder and a carbide wheel

Well, what they said was "Stay the F€£¥₩ OFF RR right-of-way, or be arrested for trespass" or words to that effect...

Actually, they were very civil in explaining that there is someone responsible for all the RR's property, and that they are sure it is there for some good reason, but if I wss interested in buying cross ties, here is a number.

I answered by asking whether there was a number for someone in a position to help me find some scrap rail, but I haven't heard back from them yet.

Now, I'm going to see if I can find a rail yard somewhere close, thanks Torrin for the suggestion!

BTW, after at least 2.5-3 years of that rail sitting there seemingly ignored,, I noticed a CSX truck parked across the street from it, with a gu y seemingly sleeping there in it....

I wonder if they were thinking that I would try to take it anyway, and sent someone to watch it, as if I would be that naive.

I'll keep you all advised as to the next installment.

Btw, to stay on thread, I had to follow a farm tank truck to get to work today, and I could tell what it was carrying about a half-mile before I saw it leaking out with every change in speed and direction, justvby the smell....

Any guesses what it was tanking, and leaking?

Liquid cow manure :-(

Best place to get rail pieces might be from a private railroad contractor. They do lots of the smaller jobs for the railroads and private industries and have all the materials and leftover pieces, often without all the bureaucracy of a huge corporation.
