Have a new water well in north Miss. Water @120'dp. It is normal around these parts to let the well run a day or two to let the water "clear up". I have let this one run for a day and a half and while running it is clear. However after letting it stop for a couple of minutes, at each restart the water is tinted some(brown) for a couple of seconds, then it clears up again. What is going on when this happens? Thanks

When I had my well dug last year (it's almost 500' dp) the driller let it run for two days before he shut it off. He told me that if I experienced issues such as the one you are experiencieng to contact him because the pump may be to close to the bottom of spring that he hit and he may have to come back out and adjust the height of the pump. I didn't have any issues, just cold clear, great tasting water..

Hi Bud, I'm in Greenback, just outside of Knoxville!

When I had my well dug, memory tells me they let it run for a day or two to run most of the muck out of it. Later he installed a whole house filter and we've been fine ever since.

I ended up with a gusher. I don't recall the exact specifications but they drilled down to something like 200' before they finally hit water. They stopped drilling at 300' (or so I think I remember) and the water column filled up about 120' in depth so I've got a column of water 120' tall and a fill rate of over 100 gpm. They put my pump something like 10 or 20 feet from the bottom. I suppose that is to help "filter" a touch simply by pulling from higher up in the column.

On the whole house filter, he simply gave it to me and I installed it. I later asked about getting a more fancy version (read more expensive) and he shook his head saying what he gave me is more than adequate for my needs.

After 10 years, I agree.

Regarding your tinting on startup... do you have a gusher well that might simply be turbulent enough to raise some muck in the water?

Don't know what kind of pump it is. My well guy said to let it run a couple of days. Let it run 1 1/2. Will talk to him about it tomorrow as it is murkier today that it was yesterday. And it takes longer for it to clear back up. Thanks all for the information.

Normally a new well is run a couple days because it's been chlorinated or shocked to purify the system. If the water is dirty, you should consider raising the pump some.

My well is ~700' and it ran a little bit cloudy until i had the pump raised 20'. Now it is very clear.
